Abram C. Van Engen, associate professor of English in Arts & Sciences, organized a national conference on “Religion and Politics in Early America.” Sponsored by the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics and the Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democracy, the conference took place March 1-4 in St. Louis. 

Opera star Susan Graham, dubbed “America’s favorite mezzo” by Gramophone magazine, will perform “Frauenliebe und-leben: Variations,” a solo recital pairing Robert Schumann’s beloved song cycle with related works by Edvard Grieg, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, Claude Debussy, Pyotr Tchaikovsky and others.

James Kolker, university architect and associate vice chancellor at Washington University in St. Louis, has been elevated to the College of Fellows in the American Institute of Architects, an honor bestowed on only about 3 percent of the organization’s 90,000 members.

Ari Nachum Berlin, MD, a pediatric intern at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and a 2017 graduate of the School of Medicine, died Feb. 23 in St. Louis after a 2 ½-year battle with pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer. He was 27. A memorial service is planned Tuesday, March 6, on the Medical Campus.

Elizabeth S. Haswell, associate professor of biology in Arts & Sciences, has been elected as a council delegate for biological sciences for the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Her term began Feb. 20.

Washington University in St. Louis faculty, staff and students are mourning the death of Katrina Banks, administrative coordinator for the Office of Undergraduate Research and a student in University College in Arts & Sciences. She was 31.

The university’s Police and Parking Services departments, in partnership with Hartmann’s Car Care and Towing, once again will sponsor free travelers’ vehicle inspections for students, faculty and staff. New this year, the service will be offered from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 5-9, at Hartmann’s, 6615 Olive Blvd.
