Jennifer Wray Cole, MD, associate professor of anesthesiology, died Saturday, July 2, 2011, from injuries sustained in a bicycling accident. She was 52.

Gary K. Ackers, PhD, professor emeritus, died from problems related to early-onset Alzheimer’s disease Friday, May 20, 2011, in Oro Valley, Ariz. He was 71.

Robert L. Payton, vice chancellor for university development from 1960-65 and vice chancellor for planning from 1965-66, died May 19, 2011, at a skilled nursing facility in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 84.

Gustav Schonfeld, MD, has died in New York City while on vacation visiting his children. The pioneering lipid researcher and former head of the Department of Medicine passed away due to complications from myelofibrosis.

David E. Kennell, PhD, professor emeritus of molecular microbiology, died April 20, 2011. He was 78 and lived in University City, Mo.

Rodolphe L. ”Rudy“ Motard, PhD, professor of chemical engineering and chairman from 1978-1991 of the chemical engineering department in the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis, died April 23, 2011. He was 85.

Srinivasan Sridharan, PhD, professor of civil engineering at Washington University in St. Louis since 1980, died April 24, 2011, at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis from complications of treatment for leukemia. He was 69.

Walter F. Ballinger II, MD, former head of the Department of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine, died Friday, April 29, 2011, of pneumonia at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. He was 85.

Annelise Mertz, professor emerita in the Performing Arts Department (PAD) in Arts & Sciences, died Friday, April 28, at her home in Clayton, of pancreatic cancer. She was 93.

Paul R. Manske, MD, professor of orthopaedic surgery, died Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital of an extended illness. He was 72. Manske, a hand surgeon at Washington University since the late 1960s, was chairman of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery from 1983-1995. In addition, he was formerly orthopedic surgeon in chief at Barnes Hospital and director of hand surgery at Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
