The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has created the Alan Permutt Career Development Award in honor of the late M. Alan Permutt, MD, who died June 10, 2012.

Henry L. “Roddy” Roediger III, PhD, an internationally recognized scholar of human memory and the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has received the William James Fellow Award from the Association for Psychological Science (APS). Describing Roediger as “one of the world’s best known and most respected researchers in cognitive psychology,” the APS presented him with its highest honor during the annual convention in Chicago May 24-27.

Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Mark W. Smith, JD, assistant vice chancellor and director of the Career Center at Washington University of St. Louis, to serve on the Midwestern Higher Education Commission (MHEC). The commission advances higher education through interstate cooperation and resource sharing.

David H. Gutmann, MD, PhD, a neurofibromatosis expert at the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has received the 2012 Friedrich von Recklinghausen Award.

Maranda Witherspoon has agreed to co-lead a group of community members and public health experts who are working to improve cancer prevention and care in medically underserved populations.

Carl Phillips, professor of English in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has won the 2011 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in poetry for Double Shadow, his most recent book of poetry. Phillips was one of 12 winners recognized during a ceremony April 20 at the University of Southern California.

Susan E. Mackinnon, MD, received the Clinician of the Year award and the Research Achievement Award in Basic Science at the American Association of Plastic Surgeons’ annual meeting April 14-17, 2012, in San Francisco.

The Joanne Knight Breast Health Center at Washington University Medical Center and Siteman Cancer Center has two new leaders, Julie Margenthaler, MD, and Catherine Appleton, MD. The center was developed as a collaboration among the departments of surgery and radiology and Barnes-Jewish Hospital and has benefitted women because of its ability to provide coordinated care.

Winner have been named for the 25th annual Neureuther Student Book Collection Essay Competition sponsored by Washington University Libraries. WUSTL undergrads and graduate students entered their essays into one of two categories, competing for prizes of $1,000 for first place and $500 for second place in each category.
