Rajendra S. Apte, MD, PhD, the Paul A. Cibis Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, is the first recipient of the Presidents’ Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists.

Erica Majumder, a graduate student in chemistry, won a travel grant from the American Chemical Society International Office to attend the International Symposium in Chemical Education Research in Lima, Peru, in October.

Marcus E. Raichle, MD, was among a group of 2014 Kavli Prize winners honored with a White House reception in late July. Raichle, the Alan A. and Edith L. Wolff Distinguished Professor, was one of three scientists awarded the Kavli Prize in Neuroscience on May 29.

Marisa Bass, PhD, assistant professor of art history and archaeology in Arts & Sciences, received a research seed grant from the Humanities Center to fund her research in Munich in August for her new project, “Forged by Misfortune: The Art of Joris Hoefnagel in the Wake of the Dutch Revolt.”

Jeff Peipert, MD, the Robert J. Terry Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, will receive the Alan F. Guttmacher Lectureship Award at the 2014 Reproductive Health conference of the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals.

Jeffrey McCune, PhD, has been named director of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program at Washington University in St. Louis. Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in New York, the program aims to increase diversity in higher education by encouraging talented but underrepresented students to pursue doctorates in the humanities and social sciences.

Jennifer K. Lodge, PhD, Washington University in St. Louis’ vice chancellor for research, recently graduated from the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Ila Sheren, PhD, assistant professor of art history and archaeology in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, made a presentation at the International Conference on Street Art and Urban Creativity in July in Lisbon, Portugal.

Gabriel Bien-Willner, MD, PhD, instructor in the Department of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has received a one-year $30,000 grant from the American Cancer Society for research titled “Identification of Genomic AML Fusion Onco-protein Targets with Calling Cards.”

Laurie Maffly-Kipp, PhD, a professor in the humanities in Arts & Sciences and in the John C. Danforth Center on Religion & Politics at Washington University in St. Louis, received the 2014 James W.C. Pennington Award for her research on African-American religion and history.
