St. Louis-based design firm PGAV Destinations has pledged $125,000 and the volunteer time of its leading designers to support The Alberti Program at Washington University’s Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts for the next five years.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund has recognized two researchers at the School of Medicine for their studies in pulmonary medicine and cardiology. The two — among 14 scientists selected nationally to receive the BWF 2015 Career Award for Medical Scientists — are Jennifer Alexander-Brett, MD, PhD, and Kory J. Lavine, MD, PhD.

Sophia Hayes, PhD, professor of chemistry in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has won the American Chemical Society St. Louis Section’s 2015 Saint Louis Award.

Shashikant Kulkarni, PhD, an associate professor of pathology and immunology at the School of Medicine, has been named editor-in-chief of the journal Cancer Genetics.​​​​

​Melody Goodman, PhD, an assistant professor of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and a research member of Siteman Cancer Center, has been appointed to the City of St. Louis Board of Health and Hospitals.

John Fortner, PhD, assistant professor in the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis, has received the 2015 Sustainable Nanotechnology Organization Emerging Investigator Award.​

Denise Ward-Brown, associate professor in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, and poet Travis Mossotti, a grant analyst in the university’s Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, are among 10 recipients of the Regional Arts Commission’s 2015 Artist Fellowships.

Rohit Pappu, PhD, the Edwin H. Murty Professor of Engineering at Washington University’s School of Engineering & Applied Science, will help spearhead the newly formed Human Dark Proteome Initiative, launched Nov. 9 by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and The Scripps Research Institute.

Teach For America recently released its annual list of schools contributing the greatest number of alumni to its 2015 teaching corps. Among medium-sized universities, Washington University in St. Louis is again among the top contributors.
