Six faculty members in Arts & Sciences have received semester-long fellowships for fall 2017 or spring 2018 from the Center for the Humanities. They are: Jeffrey McCune, Sowande’ Mustakeem and Christopher Stark (fall); Caroline Kita, Long Le-Khac and Anika Walke (spring).

Doug Wiens, the Robert S. Brookings Distinguished Professor of earth and planetary sciences in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has been elected chair of the board of directors of IRIS (Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology). The consortium of more than 100 U.S. universities collects and shares seismic and other geophysical data with the goal of better understanding the planet.

The 10 newest members of Washington University in St. Louis’ Danforth Staff Council have been selected. The council provides a platform for ongoing communication between Danforth staff and the senior administration.

Tiffany Stanley, managing editor of the online news journal of the John C. Danforth Center on Religion & Politics, is one of four journalists selected to receive the 2016 Science for Religion Reporters Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

A book by Lerone Martin, assistant professor of religion and politics in the Danforth Center on Religion and Politics, has been awarded the prestigious Frank S. and Elizabeth D. Brewer Prize of the American Society of Church History (ASCH).

Christopher Stark, assistant professor of music in Arts & Sciences, composed music for the movie “Novitiate,” which will make its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

Alexander Stefaniak, assistant professor of musicology in Arts & Sciences, has written a book on the German composer and music critic Robert Schumann.

Gregory R. Bowman, an assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has received a 2016 Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering.

WUVets, a veterans group at Washington University in St. Louis, was named Chapter of the Year by the Student Veterans of America (SVA), a national organization that provides resources and scholarships to college veterans. WUVets leaders James Petersen and Jennifer Goetz, both students at the Brown School, accepted the award at the SVA National Conference in California.

Melvin Blanchard, MD, a professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and program director of the internal medicine residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, has received a 2017 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award.
