Rod Barnett, chair of the Master of Landscape Architecture program in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, has received a $20,000 grant from the Whitaker Foundation to support the St. Louis Parks Project.

Barbara A. Schaal, dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences and president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), gave the president’s address at AAAS’ 2017 annual meeting, held Feb. 16-20 in Boston. Henry L. “Roddy” Roediger III, the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor in Arts & Sciences, delivered the meeting’s John P. McGovern Award Lecture in the Behavioral Sciences.

Four members of the Washington University in St. Louis community have been selected to participate in FOCUS St. Louis leadership programs. Brown School students Hannah Dubreville and Cory Schmitt will participate in the Emerging Leaders program, while Jennifer Thomas, sustainability coordinator, and Emily Underwood, a 2002 alumna, were chosen for the Coro Women In Leadership program.

The St. Louis American Foundation will honor Andwele Jolly and Frank Wilson of Washington University in St. Louis at its seventh annual Salute to Young Leaders Awards Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Four Seasons Hotel.

David K. Tan, MD, an associate professor of emergency medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been elected president-elect of the National Association of EMS Physicians.

The next class of the university’s Professional Leadership Academy & Network (PLAN) has been selected. PLAN is a yearlong professional development program, overseen by the Office of the Provost, intended to cultivate future leaders at Washington University.

Hilary M. Babcock, MD, an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named vice president of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), a professional group that promotes research, education and advocacy for safe health care.

Washington University Libraries has received a two-year, $34,433 grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission for the project “Liberating the Spoken Word: Poetry Readings and Literary Performances in St. Louis, 1969-2005.”

Sarah Gehlert, the E. Desmond Lee Professor of Racial and Ethnic Diversity at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, has been inducted as the new president of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare.

Matthew Lew, assistant professor in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, plans to develop a new technology combining chemical probes, optics and imaging software to see inside cells at the nanoscale level thanks to a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, which provides $500,000 over five years.
