Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton was selected by Ingram’s Magazine as one of its 2017 Icons of Education. He was featured in Ingram’s February edition and, along with the other honorees, was recognized during an awards ceremony held March 8 in Kansas City.

David H. Perlmutter, MD, executive vice chancellor for medical affairs and dean of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named chair-elect of the Medical Sciences Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). His three-year term began in February.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the journal Bayesian Analysis, a committee of its former and current editors named a paper by Nan Lin, associate professor of mathematics in Arts & Sciences, and former doctoral student Qing Li “the most promising paper published in the journal in the last five years.”

ShiNung Ching will examine cognitive functions of the brain with a five-year, $500,000 CAREER award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Ching is the Das Family Career Development Distinguished Assistant Professor of electrical and systems engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis.

Robert Sussman, a longtime professor of anthropology in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis who died in June 2016, is being honored with the creation of an annual award in his name for scientists making important mid-career contributions to the field of anthropology.

David C. Van Essen, PhD, the Alumni Endowed Professor of Neurobiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, is being awarded the George A. Miller Prize for distinguished scholarship by the Cognitive Neuroscience Society.

Guy M. Genin, professor of mechanical engineering and materials science in the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis, has been elected to the 2017 College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

Rod Barnett, chair of the Master of Landscape Architecture program in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, has received a $20,000 grant from the Whitaker Foundation to support the St. Louis Parks Project.

Barbara A. Schaal, dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences and president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), gave the president’s address at AAAS’ 2017 annual meeting, held Feb. 16-20 in Boston. Henry L. “Roddy” Roediger III, the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor in Arts & Sciences, delivered the meeting’s John P. McGovern Award Lecture in the Behavioral Sciences.

Four members of the Washington University in St. Louis community have been selected to participate in FOCUS St. Louis leadership programs. Brown School students Hannah Dubreville and Cory Schmitt will participate in the Emerging Leaders program, while Jennifer Thomas, sustainability coordinator, and Emily Underwood, a 2002 alumna, were chosen for the Coro Women In Leadership program.
