Thaddeus Stappenbeck, MD, PhD, the Conan Professor of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been elected to the Association of American Physicians in recognition of his work advancing biomedical science, medicine or health through innovative research.

Peter Panagos, MD, professor of emergency medicine and of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been appointed vice chair and chair-elect of the Stroke Council of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

The St. Louis premiere of “The Surrounding Game” will be Monday, Feb. 26, at the Landmark Tivoli Theatre on the Delmar Loop. The award-winning documentary film was directed and produced by Cole Pruitt, a PhD candidate in chemistry in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

Multimedia artist Ebony G. Patterson and sculptor Jill Downen have won the 2018 Stone & DeGuire Contemporary Art Awards. The awards are presented by the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. Artists receive $25,000 to advance their studio practices.

Senior Zoe Grieze and master’s candidate Andrew McIlvaine will represent the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts in the Art St. Louis exhibition “Varsity Art XXII.”

Carey-Ann D. Burnham, associate professor of pathology and immunology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis,  has been named a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Academy of Microbiology.

Leah Merrifield, associate vice chancellor for community engagement and St. Louis college readiness initiatives at Washington University in St. Louis, has been selected to serve as a mentor at the SXSW EDU Conference & Festival March 5-8 in Austin, Texas. The event is devoted to advancing teaching and learning.

Kater Murch, assistant professor of physics in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has been named a 2018 Cottrell Scholar by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement.

Jessie Lee, a member of the First Year Center executive board, is one of five students nationwide to win the Jordan Smith Undergraduate Fellowship from the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience & Students in Transition at the University of South Carolina. Lee will be formally recognized Monday, Feb. 12.

Aimee James, associate professor of surgery in the Division of Public Health Sciences at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been appointed the Prevention and Control Research Program co-leader for Siteman Cancer Center.
