A book by John Bowen, professor of anthropology and the Dunbar-Van Cleve Professor in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, received an honorable mention for the 2019 Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies.

Alexis Elward, MD, was named St. Louis Children’s Hospital chief medical officer. The appointment became effective Jan. 1.

Tim McBride, the Bernard Becker Professor at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, will begin a part-time contract appointment within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as assistant secretary for planning and evaluation in the Office of Health Policy.

Monique Bedasse, assistant professor of history and of African and African-American studies in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has won the 2018 Wesley-Logan Prize in African diaspora history.

Six faculty members from Washington University in St. Louis have won Emerson Excellence in Teaching awards.

Carl Bender, the Konneker Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Physics in Arts & Sciences, has received a Humboldt Research Award. The award is given to academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future.

Lan Yang has been named editor-in-chief of Photonics Research, which publishes fundamental and applied research progress in optics and photonics.

Jeffrey I. Gordon, MD, of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and Yoram Rudy, of the School of Engineering & Applied Science, and have been selected as National Academy of Inventors fellows. They will be inducted in April at a ceremony during the academy’s annual meeting in Houston.

The Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya presented an honorary doctorate — the first in its 25-year history — to Washington University in St. Louis Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton for his long-standing contribution to academia, science and service.

Rick W. Wright, MD, the Jerome J. Gilden Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named president-elect of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Wright will serve a one-year term as president-elect and become president of the organization in October.
