Angela Peacock, a student at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, is among 10 students nationwide to be awarded a Veterans of Foreign Wars-Student Veterans of America Legislative Fellowship, a semester-long academic experience. 

Developmental biologists Irving Boime and Douglas Covey, of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, have been named senior members of the National Academy of Inventors.

Junior Ruoyi Gan and senior Madeline Halpern are representing the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts in Varsity Art XXIII. Hosted by Art St. Louis, the annual exhibition features work by undergraduate and graduate students from St. Louis college and university-level art programs.

Shanti Parikh, associate professor of sociocultural anthropology and of African and African-American studies in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, led planning for the American Ethnological Society (AES) annual spring meeting, which takes place March 14-16 at the university.

The German Academy for Language and Literature will award its 2019 Friedrich Gundolf Prizeto Paul Michael Lützeler, the Rosa May Distinguished University Professor in the Humanities in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

Joshua Blodgett, assistant professor of biology in Arts & Sciences, received a five-year $900,500 grant to support his research related to actinomycete bacteria. This type of bacteria produces a majority of current antibiotics and may harbor other useful small molecules that could be revealed by activating silent genes.

Regis J. O’Keefe, MD, PhD, the Fred C. Reynolds Professor and head of Orthopaedic Surgery at the School of Medicine, received the Alfred R. Shands Jr., MD, Award.

An image of the maze-like structures of the mouse olfactory system recently was named a winner of the 2018 BioArt competition. Graduate student Lu M. Yang created the image.

Patrick White, MD, assistant professor of medicine, has been named director of the newly formed Division of Palliative Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The appointment was announced by Victoria J. Fraser, MD, the Adolphus Busch Professor and head of the Department of Medicine.

The next class of the university’s Professional Leadership Academy & Network (PLAN) has been selected. PLAN is a yearlong professional development program, overseen by the Office of the Provost, intended to cultivate future leaders at Washington University.
