Benjamin Allen, a music major in Arts & Sciences, will present a senior honors recital at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Grace United Methodist Church. The concert, which is free and open to the public, reflects three distinct areas that Allen has pursued at Washington University: composition, conducting and trombone.

Richard A. GephardtEncouraging people to become involved in public service will be the goal of the newly established Richard A. Gephardt Institute for Public Service at Washington University in St. Louis. Named in honor of the two-time presidential candidate and longtime Missouri congressman, the non-partisan, university-wide institute be directed by James W. Davis, WUSTL professor of political science.

SchaalMembers of the National Academy of Sciences have elected Barbara A. Schaal, Ph.D., vice president of the Academy. Schaal is Spencer T. Olin Professor in Arts & Sciences in biology at Washington University in St. Louis. With her election, Schaal becomes the first woman ever elected vice president of the Academy.

Don Higginbotham, a leading expert on the American Revolution and George Washington, will deliver the annual Thomas Fulbright Lecture in History as part of the Assembly Series at 11 a.m. Feb. 23 in Graham Chapel. The chapel is located just north of Mallinckrodt Student Center (6445 Forsyth Blvd.) on the Washington University Hilltop Campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

When is ugly beautiful? Find out when the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum presents She’s Hideous, an original one-act musical written and composed by Eric Dienstfrey. The special, one-night-only performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18.
