McDonnell International Scholars Academy will foster global understanding through partnerships with world’s top universities, leading corporations

Addressing poverty, famine, infectious diseases, international conflict and other world problems is the mission of a new global education and research initiative announced today by Washington University in St. Louis and a partnership of top foreign universities and multinational corporations. Launched with a $10 million endowment commitment from John F. McDonnell and the JSM Charitable Trust, the McDonnell International Scholars Academy creates a growing worldwide network of scholars, researchers and business and governmental leaders.

Donald B. McNaughton

McNaughtonAppointed to his current role in 2005, Mr. McNaughton is responsible for driving innovation and growth internationally, and oversees strategically important corporate relationships. He serves on the boards of Samsung Corning Company, Ltd. and Samsung Corning Precision Glass Company, Ltd., and is proposed as a director of Eurokera S.N.C. and Cormetech, Inc

Dr. Santanu Das

Dr. Das is a founder of TranSwitch Corporation in Shelton, CT, which started operation in 1989, and is the president and CEO of the company. DasPrior to TranSwitch Corporation, he held various positions, including president of Spectrum Digital Corporation, a telecommunications equipment company, where he worked from 1986 through August of 1988. Before joining Spectrum, he held various executive positions, including director, Applied Technology Division of ITT Corporation’s Advanced Technology Center in Shelton, CT.

Fiction writer and essayist Michael Martone to read Oct. 27 and Nov. 3

Courtesy photoMichael MartoneAcclaimed fiction writer and essayist Michael Martone, the visiting Fannie Hurst Professor of Creative Literature in Washington University’s Writing Program in Arts & Sciences, will read from his work at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27. In addition, Martone will speak on coincidence and fate in fiction in a lecture entitled “Homer on Homer or a Bunch of Stuff That Happens” at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3.

Historian Richard Burkhardt to speak on the modern development of ethology for the Assembly Series

Richard Burkhardt will examine the scientific, social and political aspects in the development of ethology as a modern science in his Thomas Hall Lecture at 4 p.m. on October 25. He teaches history at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and specializes in the history of evolutionary theory and ethology, which is the study of animal behavior by means of comparative zoological methods.
