The Society for Nuclear Medicine (SNM) has created an annual award named for Michael J. Welch, Ph.D., professor of radiology, of developmental biology and of chemistry.

A narrow region on chromosome 15 contains genetic variations strongly associated with familial lung cancer, says a study conducted by scientists at the School of Medicine and other institutions. The researchers found a more than five times higher risk of lung cancer for people who have both a family history of the disease and these genetic variations. The risk was not affected by whether the study participants smoked or didn’t smoke.

Bernstein, leading health insurance expert and law professor emeritus at Washington University in St. Louis says that Medicare is the most practical platform for both extending coverage to everyone and taming medical cost inflation. Students are invited show what youth are thinking in this election season by entering the Make it Clear multimedia competition, a collaboration between the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper and the Vice Presidential Debate Programming Committee.

To help facilitate interest and participation in the debate and election, the Gephardt Institute for Public Service is coordinating an all-day, campus-wide voter registration drive on Thursday, Sept. 18.

With an increased emphasis on service this election year, the Community Service Office will once again be sponsoring four University-wide blood drives during the academic year. The first drive will be held Sept. 16.

The Washington University Assembly Series will open its fall 2008 season with political satirist Mo Rocca, whose mix of clever insights and silly opinions puts the fun in “fundit.” The event will be on Wednesday, September 10 at 4 p.m. in Graham Chapel.
