Entrepreneurs awarded $75,000 in annual Olin Cup competition
An on-line tutoring service and a device designed to make custom-fit earphones are the winners of the 2008 Olin Cup competition for entrepreneurs presented by the Olin Business School and Skandalaris Center at Washington University in St. Louis. The two winning companies, Virtual Nerd and Verto, emerged from an original field of 38 entrants to earn a $70,000 investment award and a $5000 cash prize respectively.
Less invasive glaucoma surgery allows faster return to normal activity
Surgeons at the Washington University Eye Center are among the first to use a new surgical device to treat glaucoma. Surgery with the device, called a Trabectome, is an outpatient procedure that takes less time to perform and offers a shorter recovery than traditional glaucoma surgery.

Danforth University Center is LEED Gold certified
The William H. and Elizabeth Gray Danforth University Center at Washington University in St. Louis has received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. The Danforth University Center is the first LEED Gold and second LEED-certified building on the university’s Danforth Campus. Among the Danforth University Center’s many green features is a 50,000-gallon water tank underneath the building that collects excess rainwater and groundwater to be used in irrigating the building’s landscaping.
Entrepreneurs vie for $75,000 tonight at Washington University in St. Louis
Seed money for a start-up company totaling $70,000 will be awarded tonight when the winner of the annual Olin Cup investment prize is announced at 6 p.m. in Graham Chapel on the Washington University campus.
Youth Day
The annual Youth Day will be held during the men’s and women’s home basketball games Feb. 8 at the Athletic Complex. The event will feature the WUSTL bear, WUSTL cheerleaders, autographs from team members, photos, face painting and JJ Jumper, the NCAA mascot.
