The madness of March arrives on the Washington University in St. Louis campus this week as both the men’s and women’s basketball teams are hosting opening-round games of the 2015 NCAA Division III championship tournament.

Washington University will test its emergency siren systems at 11 a.m. Monday, March 2, and again at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 3. The tests will take place unless there is the potential for severe weather that day or some other emergency is occurring at that time.

Washington University in St. Louis is 19th on the Peace Corps’ annual list of the top volunteer-producing midsized colleges and universities. Currently, 14 alumni are serving as Peace Corps volunteers. Students who want to learn more can visit a Peace Corps information table at 11 a.m. March 2, in Tisch Commons.

​Applications for the Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in Leukemia Career Enhancement and Developmental Research Awards are being accepted through May 1.

Washington University will test its emergency communication system, WUSTLAlerts, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26. The test will take place unless there is the potential for severe weather that day or some other emergency is occurring at that time. For this test, WUSTLAlerts will send emails to @wustl.edu addresses and voice calls to cellphones.

​The nation’s oldest and largest student-run carnival returns April 17-19. Thurtene will join forces with UrbanFUTURE to promote academic achievement, character growth and career preparation in St. Louis schools.

Washington University is implementing a new universitywide learning management system called Learn@Work. The cloud-based application will replace the current compliance training system and is scheduled to be implemented in March.

After a year of faculty members sharing perspectives, a new program from the Office of the Provost at Washington University in St Louis is reaping the benefits of collaboration. Throughout 2014, faculty from across the university met in the Bring Your Own Idea (BYOI) program. BYOI grants provided opportunities for faculty to meet and talk about topics ranging from income inequality and global cities to data translation and the creative process.

Starting Feb. 25 and continuing for about two months, the intersection of Duncan and Newstead avenues will close as a Metropolitan Sewer District storm sewer line upgrade continues. Sections of Duncan east of Newstead have been closed during the project but will reopen when the intersection closes. Boyle is expected to reopen this spring.

Five staff members of Washington University in St. Louis will travel to South Korea in June 2015 through the Global Diversity Overseas Seminar, a professional development opportunity for staff that looks at diversity from a global perspective.
