Math team ranks 16th out of 431 in Putnam Competition
The Department of Mathematics has announced that a Washington University team, consisting of junior Anthony
Grebe, senior Alan Talmage and sophomore Jongwhan Park, placed 16th
out of 431 teams in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition, the most difficult mathematics competition for undergraduates in the country. Washington University teams also took first and second place in the Missouri Collegiate Mathematics Competition.
2015 Fair St. Louis to affect some campus parking
This year’s Fair Saint Louis will be held Thursday through Saturday, July 2-4, in Forest Park. Washington University is again providing access to some campus parking areas during the fair, so employees and students should be aware and plan for alternate arrangements.
Traffic flow, shuttle routes adjusted for Medical Campus construction
Over the next several months, construction projects at and near Washington University Medical Center will continue to affect traffic flow and shuttles as improvements to parking and intersections continue.
PB&Joy food drive runs April 2-14
PB&Joy, the annual universitywide food drive, runs from April 2-14. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to donate nonperishable, kid-friendly foods or to make a financial donation to Operation Food Search. Drop-off spots are available across the Danforth, Medical, North and West campuses.
Panel discussion: ‘Women in the Art World’ March 31
In 1972, a group of 20 New York artists founded the A.I.R. Gallery, the first not-for-profit cooperative exhibition space for women artists in the United States. On Tuesday, March 31, former A.I.R. director Kat Griefen will serve as keynote speaker for “A.I.R. Refreshed: Women in the Art World from the 1970s to Today” at Olin Library on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis.
‘Wiggle’ hitmaker, alum Sean Douglas to speak at music industry career panel March 27
Washington University in St. Louis graduate and “Wiggle” hitmaker Sean Douglas will be among the music industry insiders who will speak at “Making It in the Music Industry: A Panel Discussion with Music Professionals.” The event is at 3 p.m. Friday, March 27, in the Danforth University Center, Room 234.
Active Transportation Month promotes alternative commuting
Car Free Month has a new name, but the same goal – to motivate Washington University in St. Louis students, faculty and staff to try new ways to get around town. Now called Active Transportation Month, the annual event starts April 1 and features free bike tune-ups, a breakfast for bikers and a Metro Scavenger Hunt.
Skandalaris Center hosts student debate team March 25
The Skandalaris Center for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Washington Univeristy in St. Louis will host the student debate team for a special event Wednesday, March 25. The students will debate the topic “Resolved: Research Universities Should Encourage Entrepreneurial Activity by Students and Faculty” at 5:30 p.m. in Umrath Lounge on the Danforth Campus.
University Libraries seeking interviews with Ferguson, North County faculty, staff and contract workers
The Washington University Libraries’ Documenting Ferguson Digital Archive is seeking faculty, staff and contract workers who are living in Ferguson or surrounding communities to share their stories about Ferguson before and after the Aug. 9, 2014, death of Michael Brown Jr. at the hands of a police officer.
Poster series highlights African-Americans in science
To highlight a few of the many African-Americans leading the way in science, a series of posters highlighting African-Americans in science and technology is being displayed on the Medical School and Danforth campuses from March 4-April 17.
