Sling Health, the student-run biotechnology accelerator, will hold Problem Day on Sept. 28 on the Medical Campus. The deadline to apply to become a team leader is Friday, Sept. 7, and a team member, Sept. 28.

Members of the Washington University in St. Louis community are invited to host Washington University students in their homes for casual dinner and conversation through the Home Plate program. Founded in 2002 by Risa Zwerling Wrighton, Home Plate helps new students feel at home in St. Louis and offers faculty, staff and alumni an opportunity to engage with talented students from across the globe.

The U.S. and university flags over Brookings Hall are lowered to half-staff in memory of U.S. Sen. John McCain until sunset Sunday, Sept. 2. McCain died Aug. 25 at age 81.

Washington University in St. Louis will test its emergency communication system at 12:05 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6. The test will take place unless there is the potential for severe weather or another emergency is occurring at that time.

A memorial service in honor of Necita Roa, MD, will take place at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 15 in Graham Chapel on the Danforth Campus. Roa was associate professor emerita of anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. She died in May at age 74.

Hiring qualified students for work-study jobs is more affordable than ever. The U.S. Department of Education will cover 70 percent of a student’s pay, up from 50 percent. The university department pays the rest.

The Knight Executive Education and Conference Center is holding a school supply drive. Between now and Aug. 30, donate new school supplies — such as pencils, backpacks, crayons and scissors — at drop-off points in the Knight Center and in Knight and Bauer halls.

The School of Medicine is accepting applications for the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant to support junior investigators who have no national peer-reviewed research grant support.

To accommodate construction of the new pedestrian and cyclist bridge onto the Washington University in St. Louis campus, Forest Park Parkway will be closed between Skinker and Big Bend boulevards from 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7.
