The School of Medicine’s Institute for Informatics and BJC Healthcare’s Healthcare Innovation Lab are again holding the Big Ideas competition. Letters of intent are due Dec. 13.
Playwriting competition seeks student submissions
Undergraduate and graduate students at Washington University can submit entries for the annual A.E. Hotchner Playwriting Festival. The deadline to turn in scripts — which may be full-length, one-act or 10-minute plays — is 4 p.m. Jan. 17. Winning playwrights will be announced in March.
The Divided City announces new faculty grants
The Center for the Humanities in Arts & Sciences and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts’ College and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design announce a new round of Divided City faculty collaborative grants.
Apply for interdisciplinary research grants
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research provides one-year seed grants of up to $50,000 to support interdisciplinary teams collaborating on new and innovative research that has the potential for broad scientific or societal impact. Letters of intent are due Nov. 25, with full proposals due Dec. 17.
Nominations open for Ethic of Service Award
The Gerry and Bob Virgil Ethic of Service Award recognizes members of the university community who exemplify service and engagement with the St. Louis region. Honorees include alumni, employees, retirees, students and volunteers. The nomination deadline is Nov. 15.
Harris Award nominations sought
Nominations are being accepted for the Jane and Whitney Harris St. Louis Community Service Award, which honors a couple for extraordinary contributions to the culture and welfare of the St. Louis area. Nominations are due by Nov. 30.

Africa Pitch Competition open to students
WashU graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to submit their ideas for the Africa Pitch Competition. Business ventures and ideas with a clear benefit in Africa are welcome to apply. The deadline is Nov. 15.
International research proposals sought
Several Washington University centers, programs and institutes are currently offering research funding opportunities — including seed funding — for faculty engaged in international collaborative research. Several have deadlines in November.
Flags lowered in memory of Rep. Elijah Cummings
The U.S. and university flags over Brookings Hall are lowered to half-staff in memory of U.S. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings through Friday, Oct. 18. Cummings, of Maryland, died Oct. 17, 2019, at age 68.
