Harris Award nominations sought
Nominations are being accepted for the Jane and Whitney Harris St. Louis Community Service Award, which honors a couple for extraordinary contributions to the culture and welfare of the St. Louis area. Nominations are due by Nov. 30.

Africa Pitch Competition open to students
WashU graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to submit their ideas for the Africa Pitch Competition. Business ventures and ideas with a clear benefit in Africa are welcome to apply. The deadline is Nov. 15.
International research proposals sought
Several Washington University centers, programs and institutes are currently offering research funding opportunities — including seed funding — for faculty engaged in international collaborative research. Several have deadlines in November.
Flags lowered in memory of Rep. Elijah Cummings
The U.S. and university flags over Brookings Hall are lowered to half-staff in memory of U.S. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings through Friday, Oct. 18. Cummings, of Maryland, died Oct. 17, 2019, at age 68.
Proposals sought for seed grant program
The newly launched Social Policy Institute and the McDonnell International Scholars Academy are seeking proposals for collaboration between Washington University researchers and researchers at international partner universities.
Apply for Africa humanities fellowship
The university’s Center for the Humanities in Arts & Sciences, along with other academic partners, received funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for an Africa fellowship program, aimed at enhancing research capacity for early-career humanities scholars. The application deadline is Nov. 11.
Staff Council town hall planned Oct. 14
The Danforth Staff Council will hold its fall town hall meeting from 2-4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at Edison Theatre in the Mallinckrodt Center. Hear updates on human resources issues, MyDay and more.
Composting launches in the DUC
Dining Services has launched composting services for diners at the Danforth University Center this semester. A spot for composting food, napkins and to-go boxes is now next to the containers collecting waste destined for the landfill and for recycling in the DUC.
Staff kickball tournament planned Oct. 14
The Danforth Staff Council invites university staff members to take part in a kickball tournament on Oct. 14, during students’ fall break and immediately following the council’s fall town hall meeting. Sign up to play by Oct. 4.
