Umrath Hall will close June 20 for a complete renovation of the interior of the building and a new roof and roofing structure. It is scheduled to reopen in June 2012.

Missouri in July is hot, hot, hot, but not as hot as Ritmo Caliente, one of St. Louis’ premier Latin jazz-fusion bands. On July 7, Ritmo Caliente will launch Washington University’s annual Jazz in July series with a free performance. Sponsored as part of the larger Jazz at Holmes series, Jazz in July will feature four local ensembles performing Thursday evenings throughout the month in the cool, coffeehouse-style setting of Holmes Lounge. 

The Gateway Festival Orchestra will launch its 48th season of free Sunday-evening concerts July 10 with Various Variations, a program exploring the use of variations by a handful of composers from the Baroque period through the 20th century. Subsequent performances will take place July 17, 24 and 31.

As part of its commitment to developing entrepreneurs, this summer the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies will host 25 undergraduate interns at local commercial and social startup ventures. The interns will host panel discussions from 2:30-4 p.m. each Friday during the summer.

With the email of Wednesday, June 8, Washington University in St. Louis presents a redesigned Record, the official faculty and staff electronic publication of the university. Changes include a redesign of the Record email that includes links to regular Record features such as Washington People, Obituaries and Sports. It also includes redesigned features such as Notables and In the Spotlight, and a WUSTL in the News section with links to university stories on a national level.

The Young Scientist Program (YSP) will mark its 20th anniversary with a day-long symposium at 8:30 a.m. Monday, June 6, at Washington University School of Medicine.

A new weather alerts page on the university emergency website, emergency.wustl.edu, will give the university community information about how they can sign up for weather-related emails and text-message alerts from the National Weather Service and other local news outlets. The page can be found at emergency.wustl.edu/resources/weather_alerts.html or by going to emergency.wustl.edu and clicking on the “Weather Alerts” link in the “Alerts” box.

Getting a Twitter account going for a department or organization is relatively simple, but making the most of the social media platform can be a challenge. Washington University librarians will explore how to use Twitter as a powerful publicity tool in a workshop at Olin Library from 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 21. Registration is free and is open to WUSTL students, faculty and staff as well as people from other institutions and nonprofit organizations.

WUSTL has many initiatives in place to ensure that the university is diverting as much waste as possible — from batteries to food to used cooking oil — from the landfill.To help keep the university community updated on the recycling efforts of the university and its partners, the Recycling Committee and Office of Sustainability have partnered to develop a summary of WUSTL’s many recycling initiatives, including single-stream recycling and RecycleMania. The Department of Athletics will host the 19th annual W Club golf scramble on Monday, June 13, at the Meadowbrook Country Club in Ballwin, Mo.Entry fee is $325 per golfer, which includes greens fees, golf cart, driving range, lunch, cocktails, dinner and awards.
