On-campus bone marrow drive Feb. 29

Ten thousand people with leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell and other life-threatening diseases need a bone marrow transplant to survive. Donors with diverse racial or ethnic backgrounds are especially needed, which is one reason why the student group WU Marrow Registry is conducting an on-campus registry drive at four locations on the Danforth Campus Wednesday, Feb. 29.

George Washington Week to focus on diversity, heritage

The annual George Washington Week, sponsored by the sophomore honorary Lock & Chain, kicks off on President’s Day, Monday, Feb. 20. This year’s theme is “Who is WU?” Carriage rides, keynote speakers, community service and silent auctions all are being organized with a focus on diversity and heritage on the WUSTL campus and in the greater St. Louis area community.

WUSTL among top producers of Peace Corps volunteers

WUSTL has been named one of the top universities nationwide for producing Peace Corps volunteers. The Peace Corps recently released the “Top Colleges” list, which ranks WUSTL No. 21 among medium-sized (5,000-15,000 undergraduates) universities. Currently, 24 alumni are serving as Peace Corps volunteers.

MLA Saturday Seminar rescheduled

Due to an unavoidable conflict, a talk slated for Saturday, Feb. 18, as part of the Master of Liberal Art (MLA) Seminar Series, has been rescheduled. The talk, “The Works of Mercy,” by Daniel Bornstein, PhD, the Darrow Professor of Catholic Studies and director of the Religious Studies Program in Arts & Sciences, will now take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, in January Hall, Room 110.

Apply now to spend three weeks in China next summer

Frank Yin, PhD, ambassador to Tsinghua University, a partner institution in the McDonnell International Scholars Academy, invites Washington University in St. Louis faculty and students to participate in Tsinghua’s annual English summer camp, which will be held from June 26 to July 13, 2012. The English summer camp is an intensive English language experience for Tsinghua students. Each day is devoted to lessons, lectures, and various activities, including seminars, song and dance competitions, and other games. WUSTL native or near-native English speakers are invited to join the camp as visiting teachers and volunteers.

Women’s Society seeking nominations for Harriet K. Switzer Leadership Award

The Women’s Society of Washington University (WSWU) is seeking nominations of full-time senior women students for the Harriet K. Switzer Leadership Award. Nominations should be sent to the WSWU Office at Campus Box 1081 or emailed to sharon_britt@wustl.edu by Friday, Feb. 10. This award is presented to the honoree at WSWU’s annual membership meeting in April.

‘Rare Books in the Digital World’ at Steinberg Hall Feb. 16

Michael Suarez, SJ, will speak on “Rare Books in the Digital World” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in Steinberg Hall Auditorium on the Danforth Campus. Suarez directs the Rare Book School, an independent, nonprofit institute for the study of books, printing, and related subjects located at the University of Virginia.

Longer Life Foundation grants to be awarded

The Longer Life Foundation is seeking applications for research funding in 2012. The group plans to fund four or five grants in 2012. Letters of Intent are due by Feb. 20.

Emergency medicine offers new fellowship

The Division of Emergency Medicine is offering a two-year fellowship designed to allow emergency medicine trainees and others interested in clinical, translational or basic research careers to develop the skills to become successful, independent investigators. The program, which is coordinated through the Clinical Research Training Center, culminates in a master’s degree of science in clinical investigation.
