WUSTL health researcher seeking mothers interested in weight loss

Debra Haire-Joshu, PhD, associate dean for research in the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, is looking for mothers between the ages of 18-45 with a child 2-4 years old to participate in a study. She wants to investigate whether new Parents as Teachers family wellness information encourages families to lead more active lifestyles and lose weight.

Washington University Volleyball hosts “Dig for Pink” night Friday, Sept. 27

The Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team will host its annual “Dig for Pink” night during its 7:15 p.m. match against University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Friday, Sept. 27. Prior to Dig for Pink night, the Bears will hold a benefit night at Chill Frozen Yogurt Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Clayton.

Bone marrow registration drive Thursday, Sept. 26

Graduate student Nick Miller (right) recently donated his stem cells an anonymous leukemia patient. He hopes she is doing well though, in a way, it doesn’t matter. “It’s worth trying regardless,” he says. He encourages students, faculty and staff to register to be a donor during the campus bone marrow drive Sept. 26.

Ring in the fall with barbecue and football Saturday, Sept. 28

Washington University’s Alumni & Development will host its annual fall festival Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Danforth University Center. A barbecue lunch and children’s activities will take place until 1 p.m., when the Bears football game begins.

Register for Inkstand writing workshop

Inkstand is a writing workshop for people who serve (e.g., volunteers, veterans, public service professionals, etc.) and wish to reflect on their experiences through writing. Sponsored by the Gephardt Institute for Public Service, the workshop’s leaders are now recruiting for the session that begins Oct. 8. The deadline to register is Sept. 30.

30 Washington University graduates join Teach for America

Some 30 Washington University in St. Louis graduates joined Teach for America this year. They are serving high-need students in urban and rural classrooms across America. Teach for America reports that WUSTL consistently has ranked high among mid-sized colleges and universities that contribute students. This year, WUSTL is No. 12.
