Washington U. to Host JCC Female Fan Day

Washington University in St. Louis, in conjunction with the St. Louis Chapter of the Jewish Community Center (JCC), will celebrate the 21st annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGSWD) with the JCC Female Fan Day during the women’s basketball game against New York University on Sun., January 28. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at the WU Field House.

GM comes to campus to demonstrate fuel efficient vehicles

Engineers from General Motors (www.gm.com) will come to the Washington University Danforth campus Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007 at Whitaker Hall to discuss their fuel-efficient technologies and vehicles from 3 to 5 p.m. that day. In addition, Washington University will be presenting an overview of its research and educational efforts in the energy and environmental area, as well as providing a vision of the newly created Department of Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering (www.eec.wustl.edu). Following these presentations in the Whitaker Hall Auditorium that begin at 3 p.m., vehicles will be on display in the Whitaker Hall parking lot near the corner of Forest Park Parkway and Skinker Boulevard.

New techniques make hip surgery a better option

The first time Danielle Giessman’s leg started to hurt, the solution was simple. She stopped kickboxing. But while searching for the source of the pain, she learned that both of her hip sockets were deformed, a condition called dysplasia. Once, doctors would have had few options, but advances in hip surgery and a greater understanding of how the hip joint works are helping patients such as Giessman get back to a pain-free lifestyle.

University Police issued the following crime alert Jan. 18: St. Louis Police are investigating two robberies that occurred Jan. 17, one on the 6100 block of Waterman Avenue, and the other in the 6000 block of Kingsbury Avenue. In the first case, the victims were approached by a lone suspect who produced a handgun and demanded their property. In the second incident, the victim was approached by two suspects who produced a handgun and demanded money. The suspects took a wallet. In both cases the suspects fled on foot. The victims were not physically injured. The suspect in the first case is described as an African-American male; 20-30 years old; wearing a grey coat and blue jeans The suspects in the second case are described as African-American males, both about 20-25 years old. One has a medium build and was wearing a dark black puffy coat and baggy jeans; the other has a slender build; long braids; and was wearing a dark blue puffy coat, black/white/gray t-shirt and baggy jeans Contact the St. Louis Police if you have any information that might assist in this investigation.

WUSTL earns top-10 rankings in 19 disciplines

In three separate national ratings — faculty scholarly productivity, black student college graduation rates and the number of National Merit Scholars in the freshman class — Washington University ranks in the top 10. WUSTL ranks as the seventh most productive large research university as measured by the faculty’s scholarly productivity, as well as ranking in the top 10 in five broad areas and 21 specific disciplines, according to Academic Analytics’ Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index (FSP Index), a new quantitative method for ranking doctoral programs at research universities.
