Social work presents alumni, other awards

The George Warren Brown School of Social Work honored six distinguished individuals for outstanding school service during its annual Alumni Awards Dinner April 17 at the Coronado Ballroom. The Distinguished Alumni Award recipients are Alice K. Johnson Butterfield, Ph.D., William A. McAllister and Amy Rome. Luis Zayas, Ph.D., the Shanti K. Khinduka Distinguished Professor of Social Work and associate dean of faculty, received the Distinguished Faculty Award. The Dean’s Medal recipients are David L. Cronin, Ph.D., and Harriet K. Women’s Society honors Switzer for years of service

The Women’s Society of Washington University’s annual membership meeting April 11 took on an added poignancy as the retiring Harriet K. Switzer, Ph.D., secretary to the Board of Trustees since 1980 and University coordinator of the Women’s Society since 1986, was recognized.

Obituary: Jacobs, 91

Sydney A. Jacobs, assistant dean at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work in 1967, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at the Gatesworth in University City. He was 91.

Rate of metabolic syndrome doesn’t change among HIV-infected people

New HIV therapies have contributed to a decrease in AIDS deaths, but physicians suspected the more potent medications led to symptoms characteristic of metabolic syndrome. However, now researchers at the School of Medicine have found that the rate of metabolic syndrome in HIV-infected patients is virtually identical to that in uninfected people.
