“Boesman and Lena”
Photo by Stewart GoldstenThe St. Louis Black Rep will open its 31st season with “Boesman and Lena” at Edison Theatre Sept. 12-23. Written by South African activist Athol Fugard, the story follows two ragged wanderers who have been evicted from their home and are forced to scavenge for shelter, food and firewood in order to survive.

Sept. 1
8 p.m. — Furniture was reported taken from a fraternity house during the summer. Ttems were left in a hallway and probably disposed of by housekeeping.
Sept. 3
11:38 a.m. — The traffic arm for the lower level westbound exit to the Millbrook Garage was found to be broken and inoperable. The damage occurred sometime between 3 p.m. Aug. 31 and 11:30 a.m. Sept. 3. No estimate of damage is available at this time.
University-wide blood drive to be held Sept. 11
Volunteers are being sought to give blood during the University’s first campus-wide blood drive Sept. 11.
School for autistic children opens with help of Olin students
The St. Gemma Program for Children with Autism and Developmental Disabilities at the St. Gemma Center opened for classes Sept. 5 with the help from Olin students in the Taylor Community Consulting Program.

Relay For Life one of nation’s best
The University’s annual Relay For Life event, held March 3 at Bushyhead Track, has raised more than $311,000. The total was the second highest amount raised per capita nationwide among universities with enrollment of 10,000-15,999.

Photo by David KilperOver the last two-and-a-half weeks, 16 master’s candidates — seven from the Graduate School of Art and nine from the Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design — have worked with museum staff to construct and install new sculptures, drawings and installations by Maya Lin.
Freshman research projects awarded
The opportunity to work on a cutting-edge research project from day one with a faculty member from Engineering or Medicine is one of the School of Engineering’s exciting new initiatives for undergraduates. In fact, 17 members of the class of 2011 have received these awards. Inspired by the legacy of former Dean James M. McKelvey and now funded in part by a grant from the Clare Boothe Luce Foundation, these new undergraduate research awards give students the opportunity to find out what makes a research university special.
‘Work, Families and Public Policy’ series begins Sept. 10
Faculty and graduate students from St. Louis-area universities with an interest in topics relating to labor, households, health care, law and social welfare are invited to take part in a series of Monday brown-bag luncheon seminars to be held biweekly through Dec. 3.
