Symposium showcases undergraduate research
Is theatre an effective tool for social change? What were the effects of sexual violence on African American women after the Civil War? What is the history of organic food in America? The answers to these questions and many more will be explored during the Fall 2007 Undergraduate Research Symposium, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Arts & Sciences Laboratory Sciences building.
WUSTL to host Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs
Marxism in China, taboo images in Tibet and war, sex work and memory in 20th-century Japan will be among topics discussed as WUSTL welcomes the 56th annual Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs to the Danforth Campus Oct. 19-21. The conference is sponsored by the East Asian Studies Program in Arts & Sciences.
Parking lot closure
The Danforth Campus parking lot on the south side of the Power Plant will be closed daily from 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Oct. 4-18 for roof and air conditioning replacement at the Power Plant.

Metro’s #1 WUSTL Gold Line rerouted
Because of the Big Read Festival in Clayton, the #1 WUSTL Gold westbound bus, operated by Metro, will be temporarily rerouted. The change only pertains to the westbound bus route and will be in effect Oct. 5-6.
Heralded dancer Alberto del Saz to teach, perform on campus
Acclaimed dancer Alberto del Saz, artistic director of the Murray Louis and Nikolais Dance Company as well as co-director of The Nikolais/Louis Foundation for Dance, will teach an open master class in modern dance technique at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, in the Annelise Mertz Dance Studio. Del Saz will spend a week on campus to set choreography for “Tensile Involvement,” a signature work by the innovative multimedia choreographer Alwin Nikolais (1910-1993).
I-64/US40 construction update
• Various lane closures are scheduled between Bellevue Avenue and Kingshighway Boulevard through Oct. 6.
• Clayton Avenue will be closed between 5 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Oct. 8.
Retirees honored by University at luncheon
Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton hosted a luncheon Sept. 25 to celebrate the contribution of 72 recent retirees to the University. “Today, people at Washington University are benefiting from your hard work,” Wrighton told the retirees. “On behalf of everyone at Washington University, you have my thanks and appreciation for all that you’ve done to make this the great place that it is; a great place for a wonderful education, a great place to work and, in many respects, a place that brings benefits well beyond St. Louis.”
Immigration topic of Constitutional Conference
The St. Louis Chapter of the American Jewish Congress and the School of Law are co-sponsoring the 27th annual Constitutional Conference titled “In a Nation of Immigrants, Immigration Impasse: What Now?” from 2:30 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 7 in the Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom in Anheuser-Busch Hall.
Schlanger named reporter for ABA prisoner standards
Margo Schlanger, J.D., professor of law, has been named the new reporter for the American Bar Association’s effort to rewrite and update its standards relating to the legal treatment of prisoners.
