MEDIA ADVISORY: Washington University Commencement is 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 21
Washington University’s 149th Commencement will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 21, in Brookings Quadrangle. The university will award 2,809 degrees to 2,706 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. The university also will bestow honorary degrees on five individuals. Steven Chu, PhD., U.S. secretary of energy, will deliver the 2010 Commencement address. During the ceremony, Chu also will receive an honorary doctor of science degree. WUSTL’s four other honorary degree recipients are Brian J. Druker, MD, Joanne Knight, Richard A. Roloff and Strobe Talbott.
Department of State scholarships awarded to three WUSTL students
Three WUSTL students have been awarded a State Department Critical Language Scholarship to study critical needs languages abroad this summer.

Cutz will urge classmates to follow their passions

John Witty: 2010 Outstanding Graduate in Art
John Witty, the Record‘s 2010 Outstanding Graduate in Art in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, has studied the Renaissance and could be called a bit of a Renaissance man. He’ll earn a bachelor of fine arts in printmaking from the Sam Fox School with majors in art history and German, both in Arts & Sciences.
A night of celebration
Students kicked off Commencement Week May 17 with an evening of celebration in downtown St. Louis. More than 1,200 graduating seniors gathered for the Chancellor’s Dinner and Senior Gala.
Quinn to keynote 2010 Brown School diploma ceremony
Jane Quinn, assistant executive director for community schools with the Children’s Aid Society (CAS), will deliver the keynote address during the Brown School diploma ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, in Graham Chapel.
Haoyi Wang: 2010 Outstanding Graduate in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences
Haoyi Wang, PhD, helped develop a technique for mapping all the genes in a cell that respond to a particular genetic switch while earning his doctorate from WUSTL. Wang is the Record‘s 2010 Outstanding Graduate in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.

Wong receives Isserman prize
Senior Stephanie Wong has been awarded this year’s Rabbi Ferdinand M. Isserman Prize. The Isserman prize recognizes a WUSTL student who has made a significant contribution in leadership and service to ecumenical or interfaith activities, both on campus and in the wider community.
