From organizing a kitchen that prepares weekly meals for underserved populations in St. Louis to providing private music instruction to under-resourced youth in the area, the five outstanding individuals who received Washington University’s 2011 Gerry and Bob Virgil Ethic of Service Award exemplify a character of service and giving to the St. Louis region.

Four students have been named winners of the 24th annual Neureuther Student Book Collection Essay Competition, sponsored by Washington University Libraries. The competition offers prizes to two undergraduate students and two graduate students who write short essays about their personal book collections.

Tim Bono, who will receive his doctorate in psychology at the May 20 Commencement, could very well be the model of an engaged WUSTL student as both an undergraduate and a graduate student. He has served the university in a myriad of roles, including most notably as the graduate student representative to the Board of Trustees and to the search committee for the dean of Arts & Sciences.

Erik Trinkaus, PhD, considered by many to be the world’s most influential scholar of Neandertal and early modern human biology and evolution, and Wayne M. Yokoyama, MD, an internationally renowned immunologist and arthritis researcher, will receive Washington University’s 2011 faculty achievement awards, Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton announced.

As the Brittany Woods-WUSTL partnership develops, programs that address students’ values, motivation, and attitudes are joining those that focus on academic subjects. Schools that combine academics with programs that support social development and healthy families are called community schools.

Members of the Sigma Chi fraternity accept a $500 prize for winning the Greek division of the Green Cup. The Green Cup compeititon lasted from March 28-April 22 and allowed residential colleges and fraternities to earn points for each percentage-point drop in per-person energy use over the competition.

Both the Danforth and Medical campuses at WUSTL held many events to celebrate the week of Earth Day April 18-23. Rodolphe L. (Rudy) Motard, DSc, professor of chemical engineering and chairman of the chemical engineering department from 1978-1991, died April 23, 2011, in South St. Louis County surrounded by his family. He was 85.
