WUSTL, staff win safety awards
Washington University, two administrators and a School of Medicine department have received safety awards from the Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) and the National Safety Council. WUSTL was recognized with CSHEMA’s 2011 Complete Safety Program Award of Merit for excellence in the university’s institutional safety and compliance programs.
Washington People: Shelley Milligan
Shelley Milligan, EdD, associate provost, has a broad view of the university through her work in the provost office and previous positions at WUSTL. Whether brainstorming, troubleshooting, advocating or just listening, she always is helping make connections between schools, departments, programs, faculty, staff and students.
Entrepreneur Establishes Online Community for Girls
Alumna Juliette Brindak created a website for tween girls, where they can talk to each other, play games, and get advice on how to survive the middle school years. Miss O & Friends is now rated the third-best girls-only website that accepts advertising, according to the web information service Alexa data.
Making the World Safer for Babies, One Book at a Time
To offset the toxins found in most children’s books, Allison Reeve Manley, BFA ’93, and her husband, Rob Coleman, founded Squishy Press, which publishes natural and safe baby books.
Newcomb named director of public markets
Mark A. Newcomb has been named director of public markets for the Washington University in St. Louis Investment Management Co., announced Kimberly G. Walker, the university’s chief investment officer. Newcomb previously invested the public markets portfolio for the University of Texas Investment Management Co. Newcomb’s appointment is effective Monday, Aug. 1.
Arts & Sciences on the move
After a yearlong renovation, Cupples II is now home to the College of Arts & Sciences, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and the Office of Undergraduate Research, as well as eight state-of-the-art pooled classrooms.
University College hosts fall Preview Night Aug. 11
University College — the adult, evening and continuing education division in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis — will host a Preview Night at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, in Holmes Lounge in Ridgley Hall on the university’s Danforth Campus. Preview Night will feature speakers who will discuss class and program offerings, admissions requirements and financial aid.

Arts & Sciences names new facilities director
Dzenana Mruckovski, former public works director for the city of Crestwood, Mo., is the new director of facilities in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, announced Gary S. Wihl, PhD, dean of the faculty of Arts & Sciences and the Hortense and Tobias Lewin Distinguished Professor in the Humanities.
