Twitter might appear to be one of many online attention drains, but tweeting often can prove practical. Washington University Libraries staff members are offering a series of free workshops aimed to help interested members of the WUSTL community explore how they can productively utilize this social media tool. All sessions are free to WUSTL students, faculty and staff.

But collecting and preserving these invaluable resources for future generations of scholars is the mission of Washington University Libraries’ Special Collections and of Anne Posega, head of Special Collections for University Libraries since 1999.

Washington University is adding new features to its WUSTLAlerts Emergency Notification System this spring to help the WUSTL community stay informed and safe during an emergency. Alertus beacons, pop-up messages on university-owned computers, digital signage- and cable TV-overrides, and public address system access are among this spring’s improvements.

New findings from the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project have helped identify the mechanism that makes the childhood eye tumor retinoblastoma so aggressive.

Researchers have discovered that a subtype of leukemia characterized by a poor prognosis is fueled by mutations in pathways distinctly different from a seemingly similar leukemia associated with a much better outcome.

Washington University in St. Louis has been ranked No. 8 in a recent “Green Metric” ranking of world universities by the University of Indonesia. The ranking measures university participants’ commitment to developing an environmentally friendly infrastructure. Results are based on information provided by universities on their energy efficiency, water usage, waste management, transportation and more.

WUSTL community members help place soil around the 750th tree to be planted on the Danforth Campus since 2008. The tree, a Swamp White Oak, was planted Dec. 15 and is located next to Brown Hall along the new Centennial Greenway bike path. Currently, the Danforth Campus is home to approximately 3,800 trees.

U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill made Washington University in St. Louis a key stop on her statewide Hometown Energy Tour that focused on finding practical, accessible and affordable solutions to the nation’s energy needs. McCaskill met with WUSTL administrators and scientists and regional energy industry leaders Jan. 9 in Brauer Hall. Tremendous pressure exists on Capitol Hill, McCaskill said, to cut federal funding for science. “Most people don’t realize what the Department of Energy does,” she said, “which is why they’re in favor of killing it.”
