Final blood drive of the academic year April 4

Washington University’s final blood drive for the academic year will take place Wednesday, April 4, at a variety of locations and times. All students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to participate in this effort to replenish the region’s blood supply.

Carnaval tickets now on sale

Tickets now are on sale for “Carnaval,” a yearly cultural show organized by WUSTL’s Association of Latin American Students. More than 130 students are participating in skits, dances and musical acts to highlight the beauty, creativity and richness of Latin American culture.The show is being performed at 7 p.m. Friday, March 30, and Saturday, March 31, in Edison Theatre.

Green Labs pilot program ends with significant energy savings

The pilot Danforth Campus Green Labs Initiative in Brauer Hall, held this past fall, resulted in a significant savings in carbon emissions and money, announced the Office of Sustainability. The program, modeled after a similar initiative at the School of Medicine, aims to spread energy awareness and conservation among the 850 labs on the Danforth Campus.

Doctor of liberal arts offered through University College

University College, the adult, evening and continuing education division at Washington University in St. Louis, has developed a new degree, the Doctor of Liberal Arts (DLA), created for the experienced adult learner who wishes to pursue rigorous interdisciplinary study along with independent, scholarly reading and research.

Spring Preview of WUSTL

A student tour guide begins a tour of the Danforth Campus for prospective students and their families in front of Brookings Hall. Tours will be a common sight on campus this April as WUSTL hosts Spring Preview for prospective students for the Class of 2016. During the monthlong celebration, high school seniors who have been admitted to WUSTL can experience tours of campus, sit in on classes and more.

Annual Summer Writers Institute returns with compressed format, additional offerings

The annual Summer Writers Institute at Washington University in St. Louis returns for its 17th year, this time with a new, compressed format geared toward working professionals and offering workshops in four genres. The new format takes place over eight days, from Friday, July 13, through Saturday, July 21, with evening workshops in fiction; creative nonfiction; flash fiction and prose poetry; and screenplay writing.

Take Steps for Kids 5K set for March 24

The 4th annual Take Steps for Kids 5K and 1 Mile will take place Saturday, March 24, on the Danforth Campus. Presented by the Washington University Club Running team, the event raises proceeds for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri youth mentoring organization.

Creativity, learning expert Sawyer next up for Assembly Series

Keith Sawyer, PhD, associate professor of education in Arts & Sciences, will deliver the annual Phi Beta Kappa Lecture for the Assembly Series at 4 p.m. Monday, March 26, in College Hall on the university’s Danforth Campus. His talk, “Group Genius: The Creative Power of Collaboration,” is free and open to the public.

Habif center now offers on-site diagnostic imaging

Through a new partnership between the Habif Health and Wellness Center and the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, students now can have diagnostic X-rays taken right on the South 40. WUSTL has invested in equipment and human resources to make quality medical care even more accessible to nearly 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

Green Cup winners celebrate

Sophomore Lucas Tcheyan (left) of Sigma Chi Fraternity and freshman Avital Mandil of South 40 Lee/Beaumont Residential College accept the Green Cup award on behalf of their team members at the Green Cup Awards ceremony March 7 at Ursa’s Fireside on the South 40. The Green Cup recognized the South 40 residential college, North Side team and fraternity that reduced its energy use by the highest percentage during the four-week competition, which ended Feb. 29.
