Guillermo Rosas, PhD, an associate professor of political science, is developing sophisticated statistical models to examine complicated questions in a credible way. Much of his research hearkens back to his homeland in Mexico City, as he strives to infuse thoughtful analysis into the public dialogue.

Robert Mecham, PhD, a pioneering cell biologist, and Nancy Morrow-Howell, PhD, a leading national scholar in gerontology, will receive Washington University’s 2012 faculty achievement awards, Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton announced. Mecham is the recipient of the Carl and Gerty Cori Faculty Achievement Award, and Morrow-Howel the Arthur Holly Compton Faculty Achievement Award. They will receive their awards and give presentations of their scholarly work during a ceremony in December.

The PLAN worked, and now organizers of the Washington University in St. Louis Professional Leadership Academy & Network program are looking for a second group of participants, including staff from the School of Medicine. PLAN is a yearlong professional development program intended to help build participants’ leadership skills as well as provide WUSTL with a cadre of leaders who can contribute to university-wide initiatives and projects. Applications are due May 29.

Attendees dare to ride Pharaoh’s Fury at the 2012 Thurtene Carnival held this past weekend on the Danforth Campus. The entirely student-run carnival featuring rides, games and well-rehearsed plays and musical performances, has been a part of campus life for more than 100 years. Proceeds from this year’s event benefited Guardian Angels Settlement Association.

The Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium, set for Saturday, April 28, will feature 230 student presenters from a wide variety of disciplines. The full day of activities features a keynote address; presentation of the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Research; talks by students; a poster session; colloquiums; and an international review conference on migration and identity. All events are being held in the Laboratory Sciences Building.

Carl Phillips, professor of English in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has won the 2011 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in poetry for Double Shadow, his most recent book of poetry. Phillips was one of 12 winners recognized during a ceremony April 20 at the University of Southern California.

Graduate student groups and individual leaders at Washington University in St. Louis who help “bridge the gaps” between graduate and professional students from diverse areas of study throughout WUSTL’s seven schools were recognized during a recent awards ceremony and reception. The Graduate Professional Council’s Bridging GAPS (Graduate and Professional Students) Awards Ceremony was held April 9 in the Danforth University Center’s Goldberg Formal Lounge.

The Advisory Committee for the Diversity and Inclusion Grants has awarded eight grants totaling nearly $174,000 to Washington University faculty and administrators for initiatives that improve the university environment for women and members of underrepresented minority groups.

WUSTL is getting ready to reclaim the Guinness world record for longest massage chain Tuesday, April 24. Graduating seniors first set the record in 2010 before a group in Thailand broke it. Now, the WUSTL football team is hoping to gather 2,000 people on Francis Field — all in an effort to raise awareness about teen suicide.​

WUSTL students: No room in the truck for the futon, extra boxes of macaroni or nearly new T-shirts during move-out? Instead of throwing those items away, donate them to Share Our Stuff (SOS). WUSTL’s SOS program seeks to reduce waste and share goods typically thrown away during on-campus and off-campus move-out with those in need in the St. Louis region. SOS hosts drop-off points at Danforth Campus residential areas and off-campus.
