VIDEO: Wes Moore discusses book with First-Year Reading Program essay winners

Author Wes Moore visited campus Sept. 4 and spent the day talking with groups of students and faculty, before giving an Assembly Series address. His book, The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, is the 2012-13 selection for the First-Year Reading Program. Winners of the reading program essay contest had a special opportunity to sit down with the author in the Whittemore House.

Nicholson new ombuds for Danforth faculty

Linda Nicholson, PhD, the Susan E. and William P. Stiritz Distinguished Professor in Women’s Studies in Arts & Sciences, has been named the new ombuds for Danforth Campus faculty at Washington University in St. Louis. The Office of Ombuds was established in September 2010 to provide faculty a confidential, informal place to discuss concerns about the university, its policies or its procedures.

Brookings Quadrangle bench to be dedicated for Jim McLeod Sept. 16

Washington University in St. Louis’ Black Alumni Council will host a dedication of a Brookings Quadrangle bench in honor of Jim McLeod at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16. A reception will follow in South Brookings, Room 100. The bench was donated in memory of McLeod by members and friends of the Black Alumni Council.

University-wide voter registration Sept. 18

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service is coordinating a university-wide voter registration campaign Tuesday, Sept. 18. On that day, the institute will conduct Missouri voter registration and provide information on absentee ballot registration.

Chancellor Wrighton to give update on entrepreneurship

Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton will present “An Update on Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Washington University” at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Moore Auditorum on the Medical School campus. Wrighton will speak about ways new programs and incentives have changed the landscape for entrepreneurship at the university.

A royal welcome: New students attend Convocation

Olin Library hours extended during 2012-13 school year

New extended hours are coming to Olin Library on a trial basis during the 2012-13 school year. 24/4 hours (open 24 hours, Monday-Thursday) begin the week of Sunday, Sept. 9, in the fall and the week of Sunday, Jan. 27, in the spring. During reading and exam weeks, Olin Library will remain open 24 hours, seven days per week.
