New electronic record captures students’ co-curricular involvement

The Portfolio, a new electronic record of an undergraduate student’s involvement in student groups, leadership positions, community service, internships, awards, research, employment and many other activities, will launch with a four-week pilot project for about 80 students in October. The record is designed to complement the academic transcript.

Voter registration continues in Danforth University Center

Students registered to vote Sept. 18 in Danforth University Center during an all-day campaign sponsored by the Gephardt Institute for Public Service. People are invited to stop by the institute’s office in Danforth University Center and register to vote before the Oct. 10 Missouri deadline.

Freshmen settle into life on Danforth Campus

In August, the university welcomed a freshman class of approximately 1,640 students who came to WUSTL from across the United States and from 26 countries. Julie Shimabukuro, director of admissions, calls the Class of 2016 “a terrific group of students” who are “bright, talented and already engaged in the community.”

Danforth Center on Religion & Politics hosts open house

Two topics often avoided in “polite conversation” will be the buzz in the room as the John C. Danforth Center on Religion & Politics hosts an open house from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, in its new Umrath Hall location. The celebration offers the community a chance to meet new faculty, mingle with center staff and get an update on recent progress.

Olin makes military friendly list

Olin Business School has been named to the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools released by GI Jobs magazine. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus. 

Students ‘test drive’ jobs with internships

On Wednesday, Sept. 19, more than 115 organizations, representing 30-plus industries, will be recruiting WUSTL students and alumni at the annual Fall Internship & Job Career Fair. Senior Kelsey Brod spent the summer in Johannesburg, South Africa, working with a master printer.

Annual public health conference to focus on challenges of the 21st century

The Institute for Public Health at Washington University in St. Louis will host its fifth annual conference, titled “Rising to the Challenge: Public Health in the 21st Century,” from 12:30-5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Eric P. Newman Education Center on the Medical Campus. The keynote speaker is James S. Marks, MD, senior vice president and director, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Lee Liberman memorial service Sept. 20

A memorial service for Lee M. Liberman, life trustee and former chair of Washington University’s Board of Trustees, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in Graham Chapel. Liberman died Aug. 31, 2012, in St. Louis. He was 91.

WUSTL United Way campaign kicks off

Thanks in part to the support of the United Way, the St. Louis Area Foodbank distributed 25 million pounds of food to those in need in the bi-state region last year. The WUSTL community can help the United Way support organizations like the Foodbank by contributing to the 2012 United Way campaign, which began Sept. 6.
