Foremost authority discusses Sephardim experience during Holocaust
Aron Rodrigue, this year’s annual Holocaust Memorial Lecturer, has put to rest the widely held notion that Sephardim living in the Balkans and other European lands during the Holocaust were not as badly affected as the Ashkenazi in Eastern Europe. The truth is they experienced the same persecution and destruction under Nazi occupation. Rodrigue will speak on campus Monday, Oct. 29.
Campus Y’s Safe Trick or Treat is set for Saturday, Oct. 27
Students will be escorting little ghouls and goblins through the South 40 residence halls for the annual Safe Trick-or-Treat Saturday, Oct. 27, from 1-3 p.m. on the Danforth Campus. Health open enrollment begins in November
The 2013 health open enrollment for the health/dental plans, the health-care and child-care flex spending plans, the Health Savings Account (HSA) and the Retirement Medical Savings Account (RMSA) will begin on Monday, Nov. 12 and run through Sunday, Dec. 2. This is the only time during the year that employees may enroll in the flex spending plans, HSA and RMSA and may change health plans and/or coverage without a qualifying family status change.

Five new department chairs have been named in Arts & Sciences: Mark G. Alford, PhD, Department of Physics; Mark Rollins, PhD, Performing Arts Department; John Nachbar, PhD, Department of Economics; Hillel Kieval, PhD, Department of Jewish, Islamic and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures; Peter Schmelz, PhD, Department of Music; and Timothy Moore, PhD, Department of Classics.

Fundraising flourishes as Dance Marathon awareness spreads
Some 900 students have signed up to dance all night in the 14th annual St. Louis Area Dance Marathon. The 12-hour event begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Athletic Complex Field House, and lasts until 2 a.m. the next day. Faculty and staff are encouraged to take part, too, with Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton donating $14 for every employee who attends the reception. Proceeds benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of Greater St. Louis.
Service First volunteers brighten area public schools
WUSTL volunteers painted bleachers at University City High School Oct. 13, as part of Service First. Through this annual community service event, organizers work with principals of KIPP: Inspire Academy, St. Louis and University City public schools to identify needs.
Puppy love helped charity at Rent-a-Pet event
Junior Yoni Barlev “rented” Max during Chi Omega sorority’s recent fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The sorority raised nearly $600 by renting dogs for 15-minute stints. More than 100 people rented the eight pets volunteered by faculty and staff. Make-A-Wish Foundation is the sorority’s nationally designated charity.
Financial Freedom Seminar: Time to plan is now
In remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr., the Society of Black Student Social Workers (SBSSW) and the Office of Student Affairs at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis will host its annual Financial Freedom Seminar on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013.
Cloninger receives honorary doctorate
C. Robert Cloninger, MD, the Wallace Renard Professor of Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, received an honorary doctorate at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden in a ceremony Oct. 17.
