Two faculty members have been named Faculty Fellows in the Office of the Provost: Shelly Sakiyama-Elbert, PhD, professor and associate chair of biomedical engineering, and Heather Corcoran, MFA, associate professor of communication design. They are working on important university initiatives with Edward S. Macias, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs.

The Brown School has appointed three new assistant deans. Cynthia Williams has been promoted to assistant dean for field education and community partnerships; Nancy B. Mueller has been named assistant dean for planning and evaluation; and Freddie Wills Jr. has been named assistant dean for strategic implementation. The appointments were effective Jan. 2.

Enola K. Proctor, PhD, the Frank J. Bruno Professor of Social Work Research and associate dean for faculty at the Brown School, has been named director of the Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) initiative at the Institute for Public Health.

Luce Scholar Jeremy Pivor, also a Rhodes and Marshall scholar finalist, sets course for his life’s work: becoming an international ocean policy expert.

Mark W. Smith, JD, assistant vice chancellor and director of the Career Center, has been promoted to associate vice chancellor for students and will continue as director of the Career Center, announced Sharon Stahl, vice chancellor for students. In his new role, he will also oversee the Office for International Students and Scholars.

The fourth-annual Olin Sustainability Case Competition will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in Simon Hall’s May Auditorium. Titled “Blight, Plight and Urban Flight,” the competition offers students an opportunity to make an impact at WUSTL through creative solutions to real problems affecting the community.

The International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability (I-CARES) has released its 2013 Call for Research Proposals. I-CARES will award up to $500,000 this year in seed funding for innovative research projects to tenured and tenure-track faculty at Washington University. 

The lecture by playwright Sarah Ruhl, scheduled for noon Thursday, Jan. 31, in the Ann W. Olin Women’s Building, has been postponed.

Jack Dorsey, founder of Twitter, and Salman Khan, founder of the Khan Academy, will join President Bill Clinton at the 2013 Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) at Washington University in St. Louis April 5-7, 2013.
