The offices of Sustainability and Parking and Transportation challenge the WUSTL community to try alternative means of commuting to campus during Car-free Month, April 1-24. The teams with highest number of car-free trips and greatest number of car-free miles will win awards. April 12 is the last day to register for the Car-free Challenge.

Named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine, Cory A. Booker, the mayor of Newark, N.J., has been selected to give the 2013 Commencement address at Washington University in St. Louis, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. The university’s 152nd Commencement ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, May 17, in Brookings Quadrangle.​

The WUSTL men’s and women’s swimming teams are set to host their annual swim lessons on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning Tuesday, April 9, at the Millstone Pool. The deadline to sign up for lessons is Monday, April 8.

During a recent reception to mark the beginning of the Loop Student Living Initiative’s construction phase, Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton thanked University City and City of St. Louis government officials, business owners and residents for their role in the project’s progression. The celebration was held at the Three Kings Public House on Delmar Boulevard, which is in the same block as the construction.

Also, beginning with the reopening, a new breakfast service will be offered Monday – Friday from 7 to 10 a.m.

On March 26, the Campus Diversity Collaborative and Human Resources Department teamed up to offer a panel discussion in College Hall on “Diversity in Recruitment, Hiring, and Retention: Challenges and Resources.” More than 80 staff and faculty members heard from panelists who discussed their research expertise and professional experience related to diversity and inclusion.

President Bill Clinton announced the launch of the third annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) Commitments Challenge, a competition of ideas from college students in the form of a bracket. The KHE Project, a commitment to action by WUSTL Arts & Sciences students Emily Santos, Krupa Desai and Henry Osman, is part of the “Sweet 16” projects selected to compete.

From March 22-25, the Sam Fox School—in conjunction with The Royal Netherlands Embassy in Washington, D.C.— will present MISI-ZIIBI: Living with the Great Rivers, an international symposium investigating climate adaptation strategies in the Mississippi and Missouri basins.

M.J. Warsi, PhD, a well-known linguist and researcher who teacheslinguistics and Indian languages at Washington University in St. Louis,received the Inspirational Leadership Award at an international conference of intellectuals held recently at India International Centre, New Delhi.

About 200 WUSTL students have committed to accomplishing far-reaching projects, and they will showcase their plans at the annual Faces of Hope event on Wednesday, March 27. The event is hosted by the Gephardt Institute for Public Service and this year is focused on student commitments as part of this year’s Clinton Global Initiative University, which will hold its annual meeting on campus in April.​
