Emergency communication system to be tested at noon Wednesday, Sept. 25
Washington University will test its emergency communication system, WUSTLAlerts, at noon Wednesday, Sept. 25. The test will take place unless there is the potential for severe weather that day or some other emergency is occurring at that time. WUSTLAlerts will send emails to @wustl.edu addresses and text messages to cellphones.
Gephardt Institute’s Civic Engagement Fund seeks applicants
The Gephardt Institute for Public Service invites students, faculty and staff to apply for the Civic Engagement Fund. The fund provides support for civic engagement, community service, and community-based teaching and learning projects throughout the year. Students, faculty and staff can apply for up to $500 grants. The deadline for the next funding round is Oct. 4.
Search committee named for Ervin Scholars program director
A search committee to identify candidates for the position of director of WUSTL’s prestigious John B. Ervin Scholars Program has been appointed by Sharon Stahl, PhD, vice chancellor for students. The late James E. McLeod, beloved vice chancellor for students and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, was the only person to have served as director of the Ervin Program from its inception in 1986 until his death Sept. 6, 2011.
Law Dean Syverud named Syracuse University’s next chancellor
Kent D. Syverud, JD, dean of Washington University’s School of Law and the Ethan A.H. Shepley Distinguished University Professor since 2006, has been selected as the 12th chancellor and president of Syracuse University. He will begin his tenure as chancellor Jan. 13.
Faculty, staff invited to community engagement reception
The STL PREP (Perception, Reality, Engagement and Partnership) orientation series will launch with a welcome reception on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 5-7 p.m. at the Moonrise Hotel Rooftop, 6177 Delmar Blvd. Interested faculty and staff are welcome to bring up to two guests. Parking lot closing Sept. 27
The surface parking lot on the Medical Center campus at the corner of Taylor and Parkview avenues (C-lot) will close permanently at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27.
Olin Library expands overnight hours
Following a successful trial run during the 2012-2013 academic year, Olin Library has expanded 24-hour access to five nights a week. Olin Library is now open from 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings to 8 p.m. on Friday evenings when fall and spring semester classes are in session.
MetroLink repairs close portions of the 276 Skinker Building sidewalk
Portions of the 276 Skinker Building south sidewalk will be closed as Metro repairs a collapsed beam. Work should last two to three weeks.
Family law expert hosts film screening Sept. 23
Professor Susan Appleton, JD, in connection with her course at the School of Law, “Adoption & Assisted Reproduction,” will be hosting a film screening of Lost Sparrow with panel discussion immediately following at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, in Anheuser-Busch Hall, Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom.
Global Certificate information session Sept. 18
An information session about the Global Certificate Program will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in Seigle Hall, Room 206. The Global Certificate is an interdisciplinary program designed to expose Washington University undergraduate students to diverse perspectives and teach them practical skills needed to thrive in today’s dynamic international landscape.
