Snow day: Some of WUSTL had a long weekend due to winter storm
Most WUSTL campuses had a rare snow day Monday after the St. Louis region got blasted with major snowfall during the weekend, followed by bitterly cold temperatures. The School of Medicine remained open, and certain other “essential” services, such as police and facilities management, were operating. Crews were still hard at work Tuesday to clear the snow from walkways and elsewhere around campus.

National Academy of Inventors elects Chancellor Wrighton as Fellow
Mark S. Wrighton, chancellor of Washington University in St. Louis and the holder of 16 patents, has been named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. He will be inducted during the academy’s annual conference in March.
Robert and Barbara Frick commit $5 million to new facilities for Washington University’s Olin Business School
Robert (BS ’60, MBA ’62) and Barbara Frick have made a $5 million commitment to support the Washington University Olin Business School’s new building expansion, a $90 million project for two connected buildings – the Knight and Bauer halls – that will add 175,000 square feet and span five levels. The buildings will be dedicated May 2.
Four faculty recognized for their achievements
Four WUSTL faculty members were recognized for their accomplishments during the Faculty Achievement Awards ceremony Dec. 7 in Simon Hall. (From left) David M. Holtzman, MD, and Randall J. Bateman, MD, received the Chancellor’s Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award from Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton. James V. Wertsch, PhD, and Richard H. Gelberman, MD, received the Arthur Holly Compton Faculty Achievement Award and the Carl and Gerty Cori Faculty Achievement Award, respectively.
Annual Financial Freedom Seminar Jan. 18
In remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr., the Society of Black Students for Social Welfare and the Office of Student Affairs at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis will host their annual Financial Freedom Seminar on Saturday, Jan. 18. “Your Money, Your Future,” takes place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in Brown Hall, Room 100. It is free and open to the public.
CANCELED: Free vehicle inspections Dec. 7
The planned free vehicle inspections scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7, have been canceled due to the weather. Washington University Police Department and Parking Services, in partnership with Hartmann’s Towing, had planned to offer an inspection service for WUSTL students, faculty and staff from noon-2:30 p.m. Dec. 7 in Millbrook Garage. But travelers instead can schedule a free vehicle check at Hartmann’s.

In the unlikely event that WUSTL alters the normal work and/or class schedule, an announcement will be posted on the university’s home page, and a number of media outlets also will air an announcement.
University College Preview Night Dec. 12
University College — the professional and continuing education division in Arts & Sciences — is hosting Preview Night for the spring 2014 semester at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, in Holmes Lounge, Ridgley Hall, on the Danforth Campus. Doors open at 6 p.m.; a light dinner will be served.
Bear Necessities holds annual holiday sale
Bear Necessities, the nonprofit gift store operated by the Women’s Society of Washington University, will hold its annual holiday sale Dec. 10 and 11.
