John G. Baugh, PhD, the Margaret Bush Wilson Professor in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, is one of 10 distinguished scholars to be honored as 2015 fellows of the Linguistic Society of America.   

​The Washington University Libraries have received a $50,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The grant will allow the library system, led by University Librarian Jeffrey Trzeciak, to implement Hydra, a powerful open-source software system that facilitates collaboration among institutions that want to share their digital collections and link them to related materials held elsewhere.

Joseph Corbo, MD, PhD, associate professor of pathology and immunology, of genetics and of ophthalmology and visual sciences, has received a one-year, $25,000 grant from the Center for the Investigation of Membrane Excitability Diseases for research titled “High-Throughput Functional Analysis of Non-Coding Regions Related to Arrhythmias.”

Jean Sutherland Boggs, the first woman appointed to full professorship in the Department of Art History and Archaeology in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2014. She was 92.

Washington University’s Integrating Communication within the Cancer Environment Institute is accepting applications for pilot research projects. Proposals are due 4 p.m. Dec. 19.

Rebecca Treiman, PhD, the Burke & Elizabeth High Baker Professor of Child Developmental Psychology in Arts & Sciences, received the 2014 Society for the Scientific Study of Reading’s Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award, given every two years for outstanding contributions to the field.

Prajakta Khare-Ranade, a clinical researcher and dietitian in the Department of Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine, won an annual essay competition overseen by the Wimpfheimer-Guggenheim Fund for International Exchange in Nutrition, Dietetics and Management, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Jason Q. Purnell, PhD, assistant professor at the Brown School, was a recipient of the Urban League Young Professionals of Metropolitan St. Louis’ 2014 Distinguished Young Professionals Award, in the area of Healthy and Quality of Life Empowerment.

In continuing the university’s role as a welcoming place to discuss issues surrounding the events in Ferguson, Mo., the Office of the Provost at Washington University in St. Louis, in coordination with the Gephardt Institute for Public Service and the Office of Human Resources, are beginning a series of “Conversation Circles” on the Danforth Campus onThursday, Aug. 28.

A panel discussion titled “Race, Place, and Violence: A University-Wide Dialogue About Michael Brown” will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, in Washington University’s May Auditorium, Simon Hall.
