A month has passed since Congress allowed the funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program to expire. While states are using available funds to keep the program in place until Congress acts, eventually if they do not act this could lead to the demise of one of the most successful government programs ever implemented.

Question: Massive amounts of dirt were excavated from in front of Brookings Hall early in the east end construction project. To put the figure in perspective, roughly how many Starbucks Venti coffee cups could be filled with that dirt?

The U.S. and university flags over Brookings Hall are lowered to half-staff until sunset Thursday, Nov. 9, as a mark of respect for those killed in the shooting Nov. 5 at a Texas church.

The School of Medicine has received a $10 million commitment from longtime benefactors George and Debra Couch to support research that advances personalized medicine. “Never Been a Time,” a documentary film by Denise Ward-Brown, associate professor in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, will be screened Nov. 5 as part of the 26th annual St. Louis International Film Festival.

As a lead co-author of the K-12 Next Generation Science Standards being adopted by more than three-quarters of U.S. schools, Michael Wysession, professor of earth and planetary sciences in Arts & Sciences, is presenting an innovative “Elevate Science” instructional program published in October through Pearson Education.

A memorial service for Gregory Paul Smith Jr., who was entering his junior year at Washington University in St. Louis, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, in the Women’s Building Formal Lounge. Smith died July 27, 2017, while studying abroad in London. He was 20.

Faculty and staff are invited to join with hundreds of students at their 12-hour Dance Marathon this weekend, a fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in St. Louis. Employees can join Chancellor Mark Wrighton and Risa Zwerling Wrighton starting at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, in the Athletic Complex.
