World’s top scholars on modern human origins to gather at Washington University

Some of the world’s top scholars on modern human origins will gather March 26 at Washington University in St. Louis for the last of a four-part series of “Conversations” on key issues that will affect the future of the university, the community and the world. Arts & Sciences is sponsoring the “Conversations,” which are free and open to the public, as part of the university’s 150th anniversary celebration. The “Modern Human Origins” Conversation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Graham Chapel.

First silicate stardust found in a meteorite

Ann Nguyen chose a risky project for her graduate studies at Washington University in St. Louis. A university team had already sifted through 100,000 grains from a meteorite to look for a particular type of stardust — without success. In 2000, Nguyen decided to try again. About 59,000 grains later, her gutsy decision paid off. In the March 5 issue of Science, Nguyen and her advisor, Ernst K. Zinner, Ph.D., research professor of physics and of earth and planetary sciences, both in Arts & Sciences, describe nine specks of silicate stardust — presolar silicate grains — from one of the most primitive meteorites known.

Device detects, traps and deactivates airborne viruses and bacteria using ‘smart’ catalysts

Anthrax is nasty stuff. An environmental engineer at WUSTL uses smart catalysts in his device that can detect the presence of airborne anthrax and disable it.An environmental engineer at Washington University in St. Louis with his doctoral student has patented a device for trapping and deactivating microbial particles. The work is promising in the war on terrorism for deactivating airborne bioagents and bioweapons such as the smallpox virus, anthrax and ricin, and also in routine indoor air ventilation applications such as in buildings and aircraft cabins.

Symposium gathers computing greats to decide whether to go clockless

To meet design and cost changes, industry and government are considering clockless computing.Computing royalty, including Ivan Sutherland, the father of computer graphics, and Wesley A. Clark, the designer of the world’s first personal computer, will gather at a computing symposium Friday, March 26th, 2004, from 1:00-5:30 p.m. at Washington University in St. Louis’s Whitaker Hall Auditorium. As part of the University’s 150th anniversary of its founding, participants will honor time by contemplating how computing can evade time as the industry prepares to go clockless.

Maize genome pilot sequencing project results in six-fold reduction of effective size of maize genome

A team of scientists reports a major advance in seqencing large genomes.A team of scientists that includes a Washington University in St. Louis biologist, has evaluated and validated a gene-enrichment strategy for genome sequencing and has reported a major advance in sequencing large genomes. The team showed a six-fold reduction of the effective size of the Zea mays (maize or corn) genome while creating a four-fold increase in the gene identification rate when compared to standard whole-genome sequencing methods.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to speak on the environment for Assembly Series

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will speak on “Our Environmental Destiny” for the Washington University Assembly Series at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25 in Graham Chapel. Kennedy has devoted his career to protecting the environment and has used his legal expertise to reduce pollution. He is a clinical professor and supervising attorney at the Environmental Litigation Clinic at Pace University’s School of Law in New York. The Clinic takes a leading role in protecting New York City’s water supply and reservoirs. He helped lead the fight to turn back the anti-environmental legislation during the 104th Congress. His reputation is built on a number of successful legal actions, including prosecuting governments and companies for polluting the Hudson River and suing sewage treatment plants to force compliance with the Clean Water Act.
