In his inaugural address, Washington University in St. Louis Chancellor Andrew D. Martin called on the university community to build upon its momentum as a leader in teaching, research and patient care to better serve the St. Louis community. 

Today, as he was inaugurated as Washington University in St. Louis’ 15th chancellor, Andrew D. Martin announced the WashU Pledge, a bold new financial aid program that will provide a free undergraduate education to incoming, full-time Missouri and southern Illinois students who are Pell Grant-eligible or from families with annual incomes of $75,000 or less.

Sweeping views. An expansive park. And a killer turkey wrap. These are just a few highlights of the newly completed east end project, the university’s largest capital project in recent history. The newly completed east end encompasses 18 acres of the Danforth Campus, adds five new buildings, expands the university’s world-class Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, moves hundreds of parking spaces underground and creates a new park where students can meet, relax and celebrate. Washington University in St. Louis is proud to welcome media on Thursday, Sept. 26 for an insider look at the new East End Transformation. The 2-year $360 million campus expansion adds three new academic buildings; two new multi-use facilities; an expansion of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum; and an underground parking garage topped by an expansive new park.

The Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement invites new members of the Washington University in St. Louis community to discuss Ferguson’s impact on the region at “New in the Lou: What Does Ferguson Mean to Me?” a series of moderated panel discussions, held at the Stix House, 6470 Forsyth Blvd.

Anne Peterson, of Olin Business School, tapped into the Live Near Your Work employee housing assistance program to rehab an abandoned home in St. Louis’ West End neighborhood. The result was so impressive the Landmarks Association of St. Louis gave Peterson an award for historic rehabilitation. This year, the popular program’s budget expands to $300,000.

After 24-plus years of serving the university in Public Affairs and the chancellor’s office as associate vice chancellor and chief of staff to Mark Wrighton, Steve Givens is retiring. Here’s a look back, and a look forward to his next stage of life.

On May 22, the Washington University Prison Education Project (PEP) conducted its first Commencement at the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center in Pacific, Missouri. Joe Angeles, director of Washington University Photo Services, documented the day.

Washington University in St. Louis has admitted 49 rising high school sophomores to its innovative College Prep Program, a multiyear initiative that prepares high-achieving students with limited financial resources for college. Recent graduates of the program have been admitted to Yale, John Hopkins, Spelman and Washington University and have received millions in scholarship offers.
