Two of WashU’s largest student groups are led by one very busy junior: John Jachimiak. As co-president of Heart for the Unhoused, Jachimiak travels to shelters across the region to conduct health screenings. And as president of the campus QuestBridge chapter, Jachimiak gives scholars resources, a voice and, most importantly, a community. 

Shantay Bolton, executive vice chancellor and chief administrative officer, was selected for the 2023 St. Louis Titan 100 cohort.

Lisa Weingarth, vice president of external affairs at the St. Louis-based nonprofit Rung for Women, has been named to the newly created role of senior adviser for St. Louis initiatives in the Office of the Chancellor. Her appointment is effective Feb. 20.

Kelvin Adams, who retired in December as superintendent of St. Louis Public Schools, and Deidra Thomas-Murray, the district’s students in transition coordinator and foster care liaison, will be honored at the 36th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, in Graham Chapel on the Danforth Campus.

The Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement is accepting applications for its Civic Scholars and St. Louis Fellowships programs through Jan. 22.

University College at Washington University in St. Louis received $860,000 from the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development to help prepare and credential workers for high-demand, high-wage jobs.

High school senior Marye’ Jones got two big surprises Monday: a letter of admissioon to WashU, her dream school, and a WashU Pledge scholarship award, which will cover tuition, housing, books and more. Jones, of St. Louis, was among 700 students admitted through the early decision process.

The “Divided City” initiative at Washington University in St. Louis awarded community grants to seven recipients in the St. Louis metro area to support community work or creative practice related to urban segregation.

In The Watermen, Michael Loynd, JD ’99, weaves a compelling tale of how U.S. swimming became an international power in the first decade of the 20th century — and the band of upstart American swimmers who made it so.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offers students ages 50 and older intellectually challenging courses and camaraderie. Recently discovered photos and essays from an OLLI memoir writing course emphasize the gift of lifelong learning.
