Stuart S. Sagel, MD, professor of radiology and former director of the chest radiology section at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, of leukemia. He was 71.

John P. Boineau, MD, professor of surgery, of medicine and of biomedical engineering, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital after a long battle with leukemia. He was 78.

The No. 3 volleyball team rallied from an 0-2 deficit to defeat No. 2 Emory University in the 2011 UAA championship match Nov. 5 in New York. The UAA title is a school-record 20th in WUSTL history, and the first since 2008. Updates also included on men’s and women’s soccer, football, swimming & diving, and women’s basketball.

J. Neal Middelkamp, MD, professor emeritus of pediatrics, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at his home in St. Louis following a brief illness. He was 86. “Dr. Middelkamp has been a pillar of the academic pediatric community at Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital since his graduation from our School of Medicine in 1948,” says Alan L. Schwartz, PhD, MD, the Harriet B. Spoehrer Professor and head of the Department of Pediatrics.

John B. Shapleigh, II, MD, instructor of clinical medicine since 1949, died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, at Mari de Villa in Ballwin, Mo., of apparent complications from a respiratory infection. He was 89.

A cold, wet day wasn’t enough to keep Henry S. Webber, executive vice chancellor for administration, from riding his bicycle through a ribbon dedicating the new bicycle path through the Danforth Campus Oct. 19. Partners from the Great Rivers Greenway District, the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County, and Clayton and University City participated in the celebration. The ribbon-cutting event was part of Campus Sustainability Week.

Junior quarterback Dan Burkett threw for two touchdowns and ran for another score as the WUSTL football team posted a 24-21 win at Oberlin College Oct. 22. Updates also included on men’s and women’s soccer.

Approximately 1,500 members of the Class of 2015 arrived on campus this past August. The freshman class was selected from nearly 29,000 applicants, and approximately half are female and half male. And they have been acclimating well, thanks to welcome events and advice from WUSTL upperclassmen, faculty and staff.
