Ralph J. Cicerone, PhD, president of the National Academy of Sciences, speaks about climate change at WUSTL Jan. 23, meticulously presenting the most current data on climate change. The talk, the first in a series on climate change, was sponsored by I-CARES and the Tyson Research Center, which plan to continue to enage the WUSTL community in an ongoing conversation about climate change.

The seventh-ranked women’s basketball team erased a 10-point second-half deficit, and a second-chance basket at the buzzer by senior Brianne Monahan gave the Bears a 51-49 home victory over New York University Jan. 22. Marsha Cann, left, and Ron Himes of The Black Rep perform Jan. 16 during the 25th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration in Graham Chapel at Washington University in St. Louis. Himes, a WUSTL alumnus and the founder and producing director of The Black Rep, received the Rosa L. Parks Award for Meritorius Service to the Community. The event also paid tribute to the late James E. McLeod, vice chancellor for students and dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

Ann Behan Rehme, academic adviser at the Sever Institute in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, died Dec. 30, 2011, of pancreatic cancer. She was 60.

The indoor track and field teams combined to win six events, and senior Elizabeth Phillips set a school record in the women’s 600 meters Jan. 14 at the Titan Opener at Illinois Wesleyan University. Updates also included on men’s and women’s basketball and swimming & diving.

Senior Dylan Richter scored 20 points and sophomore Tim Cooney tied a career-high with 19 points as the men’s basketball team opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 79-72 victory over the University of Chicago Jan 7. at the WU Field House. Alumni and friends gathered for the Founders Day dinner Nov. 5, 2011, at the St. Louis Union Station Marriott. Doris Kearns Goodwin, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, was this year’s guest speaker.

Richard Stang, PhD, professor emeritus of English in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, died Dec. 14, 2011, of pancreatic cancer. He was 86. Stang specialized in 19th-century English literature, particularly the Victorian period.

Seethu Seetharaman, PhD, was recently installed as the W. Patrick McGinnis Professor of Marketing in the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. The ceremony, held Oct. 26 in the Charles F. Knight Executive Education Center, included welcoming remarks by Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton and an address by Seetharaman.
