Washington University in St. Louis this week obtained final approval for the school’s $80 million student apartment and retail project in the Delmar Loop in University City and the city of St. Louis. The construction phase is expected to begin next week as the project moves from plan to action.

Jung-Tsung Shen, PhD, assistant professor of electrical & systems engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis, has won a prestigious Faculty Early Career Development Award (CAREER) from the National Science Foundation.

Todd H. Wasserman, MD, professor emeritus of radiation oncology at the School of Medicine, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, after a long illness. Wasserman, 66, made important contributions to the field of radiation oncology.

In what is believed to be one of the earliest public works by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Charles Guggenheim, Washington University in St. Louis has unearthed and digitized a slice of academia in the early 1950s called The Second Century. Written and produced by Guggenheim as part of the school’s first major fundraising effort, the 30-minute film — filled with 1950s earnestness — chronicles the attributes of not only Washington University, but also the merits of a university education.

The WUSTL Geographic Information Systems office has moved from the Office of the Provost to Washington University Libraries. Leaders say it’s a natural fit as GIS serves all faculty, students and staff.

Rita Levi-Montalcini, PhD, a Nobel Prize-winning neurologist who performed the majority of her research at Washington University in St. Louis from 1947-1977, died Sunday, Dec. 30, at her home in Rome. She was 103.

Wrighton is in India this week with WUSTL leaders and members of the McDonnell Academy Global Energy and Environmental Partnership (MAGEEP) to first talk about global energy and environmental solutions and then meet with the university’s International Advisory Council for Asia. The first part of the trip comes to a close with a visit to a local landmark and the conclusion of the symposium — with a charge to keep working together.

The symposium continues, with a visit from a United Nations Official and a trip through Mumbai to visit co-host institution IIT-Bombay.
