Washington University in St. Louis will host environmental engineering students and faculty from Missouri and Illinois Sept. 20-21 to learn the latest in environmental engineering technologies and to share research. The 18th Annual Mid-American Environmental Engineering Conference will be held Sept. 21 in the Stephen F. & Camilla T. Brauer Hall and is sponsored by the Department of Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) has announced the six winners of the 2013 University Research Strategic Alliance (URSA) grants. URSA grants provide one-year, $25,000 seed funding to full-time WUSTL faculty members. The URSA program aims to encourage researchers to collaborate across disciplines and schools.

Helen Power, PhD, who made an indelible mark on the women’s studies program at Washington University in St. Louis, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013. Power, who was 77, suffered a heart attack at her home in St. Louis. A memorial service was held on campus Sunday, Sept. 8.

Helen Power, PhD, whose career as a lecturer of English and of women’s studies, both in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, spanned more than 30 years, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, after suffering a heart attack at her home in St. Louis. She was 77. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, in Hurst Lounge, Duncker Hall.

At Washington University in St. Louis, students in the School of Engineering & Applied Science learn more than how to be an engineer. With opportunities to go abroad to get hands-on experience beyond what they learn in the classroom, they also learn to be leaders in a global society. Sixteen WUSTL students went to Brisbane, Australia, for the International Experience program, sponsored by the Department of Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering and the McDonnell Global Energy and Environment Partnership (MAGEEP).

The Record recently learned of the death of Michael A. Weinberg, PhD, a former associate professor of history in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. Weinberg died of heart disease April 23, 2013, at his home in Belfast, Maine. He was 83.

Victoria “Vicky” Holtschlag, a laboratory manager in the School of Medicine’s Department of Pathology and Immunology and at Siteman Cancer Center, died Sunday, June 30, 2013, from an illness. She was 58.

Richard M. Kurtz, PhD, associate professor emeritus of psychology in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, died unexpectedly of cardiac arrest on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013. He was 76 and residing in Cincinnati.

Bernard Becker, MD, professor emeritus of ophthalmology and visual sciences at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, died Wednesday Aug. 28, 2013, after a long illness. He was 93.
