​Washington University in St. Louis alumna Louia Kornblatt, a finalist for a 2014 Rhodes Scholarship, is working to help women overcome gender-based violence and find their voice.

Sadie Pierce (left) and her partner, Lilly Leyh, became the first same-sex couple to legally marry in Missouri earlier this month. Leyh is set to graduate in May with master’s degrees in social work and business administration, and Pierce is a recent alum of the Brown School.

Jill Lustberg, associate director of development for Olin Business School in Alumni & Development Programs at Washington University in St. Louis, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014, at her home after battling cancer for more than five years. She was 43.

The Department of Classics in Arts & Sciences will launch a new Doctor of Philosophy in classics next fall. The program builds on the department’s nationally recognized Master of Arts but also draws on resources from across the university to create specialized tracks in ancient performance, ancient history, ancient philosophy and Greek and Roman music.

Students and other volunteers gathered last week to plant 31 native trees and shrubs adjacent to Busch Hall on the Danforth Campus as part of a sustainable landscaping project. The Office of Sustainability notes that well-designed landscapes can provide economic, public health and environmental benefits.

Rose Windmiller, assistant vice chancellor for government and community relations at Washington University in St. Louis, has been appointed a member of Missouri Governor Jay Nixon’s special Ferguson Commission. She is one of 16 members who were announced during a news conference held Nov. 18 at the Missouri History Museum.

​In an effort to serve more St. Louis-area talented learners, Washington University in St. Louis will nearly double the size of its next College Prep Program class to some 45-50 students. Now in its second year, the three-year program prepares high-achieving high school students with limited financial resources for success in college. The deadline to nominate a current high school freshman is Tuesday, Nov. 18.

Today, they help lead the annual Dance Marathon, a 12-hour party that features themed dance hours, performances, games, free food and visits from Miracle kids.​ This year’s event takes place beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Danforth University Center.
