New series of discussions about diversity and inclusion on Medical Campus

Peacock Loop Diner debuts at Lofts of Washington University
The Peacock Loop Diner, part of the $80 million Lofts of Washington University, which also features apartments for some 400 undergraduates and grocery store United Provisions, is now open for business. The 24-hour diner is owned by Joe Edwards, who also operates Blueberry Hill, the Pageant and the Tivoli. “This really makes the Delmar Loop a 24-7 neighorhood,” Edwards said.
Brownson installed as Bernard Becker Professor
In an Oct. 8 ceremony, Ross C. Brownson, PhD, a leading expert in chronic disease prevention and applied epidemiology, was installed as the Bernard Becker Professor. Brownson holds joint appointments at the Brown School and at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
Two teams win inaugural Global Impact Award
Nanopore Diagnostics and ViFlex are the inaugural winners of the Suren G. Dutia and Jas K. Grewal Global Impact Award from the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. Tom Cohen (right) and Nanopore are developing a test to better tailor antibiotics, and ViFlex is working on low-cost eyeglasses for developing countries.

Ben Weiner, a 2003 Washington University in St. Louis alum, connects Nicaraguan coffee growers and roasters through his social enterprise Gold Mountain Coffee Growers. The result: a better cup of coffee, like the new Wash U Blend, and better pay for producers.
Assembly Series to tackle issue of energy impoverishment
In the 2013 book, “Fires, Fuel & the Fate of 3 Billion: The State of the Energy Impoverished,” Brown School Professor Gautam N. Yadama, PhD, and critically acclaimed photographer Mark Katzman, presented the complex story of energy impoverishment — an issue that affects a staggering 3 billion people worldwide — by inserting the reader into the personal stories of struggle and survival throughout rural India. At 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, in Anheuser-Busch Hall’s Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom, Yadama will present his work for the Assembly Series and the School of Law’s Public Interest Law & Policy Speakers Series.
